Mount Saint Mary Athletics Hall of Fame
NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Former baseball standout Trevor Purcell will be inducted as an inaugural member of the Mount Saint Mary College Hall of Fame on April 13, 2013.
A native of Walden, N.Y. and a graduate of Valley Central High School, Purcell excelled as both pitcher and hitter during his time at the Mount. Twice named the Skyline Pitcher of the Year and twice named the Skyline Player of the Year, Purcell’s name appears many times in the Mount record books. As of the start of the 2013 season, he held career records for hits (216), triples (32), home runs (12), runs batted in (150), slugging percentage (.639), wins (22), earned run average (2.57), innings pitched (262.2), and complete games (26).
A four-time all-conference selection in the Skyline and a three-time all-conference selection in the Knickerbocker, Purcell also earned regional recognition. He was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) all-New York Region team on two occasions, claiming third team honors as a freshman and first team honors as a senior. Purcell also earned ECAC Metro Region second team honors as a junior, a year in which he recorded 11 triples and led the nation in triples per game.
The Knights were 98-51-3 during Purcell’s four years with the program, claiming a Knickerbocker Conference tournament championship in 1999 and a Skyline Conference championship in 2000. The Mount advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1999 and recorded the program’s first-ever tournament victory, a 6-1 win over Cortland in the opening round. The Knights went on to finish the season ranked 23rd in the ABCA Division III national poll.
Purcell graduated from the Mount in 2003 with a degree in public relations and is nearing his master’s degree in secondary education. He is currently teaching social studies at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy in Poughkeepsie. He resides in Newburgh with his wife, Melissa, and daughter, Peyton.
