Mount Saint Mary Athletics Hall of Fame
NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Former men's soccer player Ed Hanley was inducted as a member of the Mount Saint Mary College Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, April 17, 2015.
Hanley’s four-year career for the Mount Saint Mary men’s soccer team saw the Knights go 45-26-1, including a 13-6 record in 1990, the best in the program’s history. When he graduated, Hanley held the program records for career goals (25), career assists (24) and career points (74). He still holds the assists and points records, but his goals record was recently broken by Matt Garcia after standing strong for 20 years. He was named the Knight’s Offensive MVP his senior season, as well the team captain, and also won a Senior Class Award for Outstanding Leadership within the College community.
One of Hanley’s proudest moments as a student-athlete was the final game of his collegiate career. He tallied the first hat trick of his tenure at the Mount, scoring three goals and adding an assist against SUNY College at Old Westbury, breaking the program’s career goals, assists and points records all in the same game.
“Being a student-athlete was important to me because it was an opportunity to represent the Mount both on and off the field,” said Hanley. “It taught me to lead by example and gave me life lessons that I continue to use to this day.”
Hanley is still involved in soccer today. He is a coach for a U13 boys’ team as well as a U12 girls’ team in the Long Island Junior Soccer League. He also plays for Celtic in the Suffolk County Men’s League, a men’s over-30 team.
Hanley is currently the District Sales Manager for Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. of New York. He has worked from the ground floor, up, for various divisions within the Pepsi system for 15 years. He is married to his wife Maureen, and they have two daughters, Aileen and Shannon
