Mount Saint Mary Athletics Hall of Fame
A two-sport standout for the Mount, Shannan starred in both softball and women's basketball. On the basketball court, she scored just shy of 1,100 career points to go along with 377 assists, 268 steals and 242 rebounds.
Â
A sharp shooter from distance, Shannan knocked in 117 three-point field goals, shooting better than 43-percent from three-point range for the Knights. As a junior, Shannan converted at 50-percent from bonus distance on her way finishing second the country in three-point field goal percentage. She went on to be named an All-Met Writers pick following her standout junior campaign.
Â
On the softball field, Shannan hit better than .500 in two of her four seasons for the Knights and led the country in runs scored in both her freshman and junior seasons.
Â
"My biggest memories are bigger than just playing the sport, they're about being part of a family. I spent all my time with my teammates and made some great friends during college. Also, playing basketball and softball in college gave me life skills that helped me persevere. I learned time management skills, discipline, hard work and commitment," stated Fish.
Â
Among her proudest moments as a student-athlete, Shannan recalls a time during her freshman year when her grades were not where she wanted them. She improved her GPA and went on to graduate Magna Cum Laude from the Graduate program in Education.
Â
In addition, Shannan recalls having a 'horrible' three-point percentage following her sophomore season. After being told to be more selective, Shannan put in a lot of hard work and shot better than 50-percent from three-point range as a junior, proving that hard work does pay off.
Â
Upon graduation, Shannan worked as a graduate assistant in admissions at the Mount and continued as an admissions representative while completing her Master's degree.
Â
Shannan currently teaches ninth and tenth grade English inclusion at Beacon High School and coaches various levels of Marlboro youth basketball, St. Mary's CYO as well as a Dutchess Debs 12U travel Softball team.
Â
Shannan currently resides in Newburgh with her son Dylan Gunsett (14) and daughter Leah Gunsett (12).
