Mount Saint Mary Athletics Hall of Fame
NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Former basketball player Craig Newton was inducted as a member of the Mount Saint Mary College Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 5, 2014.
Craig Newton owns every assist record on the Mount men's basketball record list. He set the single-game assists record of 14 twice in the 1996-97 season, first against Medgar Evars on Jan. 21, 1997, and again on Feb. 20, 1997 against Centenary. That same season, he set the single-season assist record with 216 and the single-season assists per game record with an average of 8.0. His eight assists per game ranked fourth in the nation in 1996-97.
He finished his career with 499 assists, the most in program history. He, too, was a member of the 1996-97 Skyline Conference champion Knights. He ranks eighth on the all-time scoring list with 1,292 career points. He was also a prolific defender on the ball and stands second all-time in program history with 252 steals.
Newton currently works as an account executive with UPS, working out of the Kingston, N.Y. area. He is married to his wife, Suzanne, and they have a daughter, Ciara, and a son, Trey. One of his proudest moments as a Knight was sinking an overtime buzzer beater on the Knights' home court to beat New Jersey Institute of Technology, which, at the time, was ranked No. 5 in the nation in Division III basketball.
