NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Former men’s basketball standout Brendan Twomey will be inducted as an inaugural member of the Mount Saint Mary College Hall of Fame on April 13, 2013.

A native of Newburgh, N.Y. and a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy, Twomey graduated from the Mount as the program’s all-time leading scorer and currently ranks second on the all-time list with 1,503 points as a Knight.  Added to his 306 points scored as a freshman at SUNY Oneonta, Twomey totaled 1,809 points over his four-year career, an average of 16.6 points per game.  In his three years with the program, the Knights went 58-29, including a mark of 23-8 in 2002-03 that stood as the best record in school history until 2011-12.

A three-time first team all-conference player in the Skyline, Twomey was named the Skyline Player of the Year as a senior in 2003-04.  He earned ECAC Metro Region second team recognition as a junior and first team honors as a senior.  Twomey also garnered regional recognition from D3hoops.com, taking home second team All-Atlantic Region honors in 2002-03 and 2003-04.  He also earned national recognition from D-III News, earning pre-season All-American honors as a junior and senior and All-American honorable mention at the close of his senior season.

At the time of the his graduation, Twomey held Mount career records for points (1,503), three-pointers (309), three-pointers per game (3.63), three-point percentage (41.6-percent), and free throw percentage (81.3-percent).  His records for three-pointers per game, three-point percentage, and free throw percentage still stand.  Twomey also maintains the record for free throw percentage in a season (85.7-percent), steals in a season (96), and steals per game in a season (3.1 per game).

In the NCAA Division III record books, Twomey ranks 11th all-time in three-point field goals made 362.  He also ranks 23rd in three-pointer made per game for a career (3.32).

Twomey graduated from the Mount in 2004 with a degree in business management and administration.  Upon graduation, Twomey played professionally for Merry Monk Ballina and the Limerick Lions of the Irish Super League, as well as the Carolina Thunder of the American Basketball Association.  He went on to serve as the Game Scout Video Coordinator for the NBA before landing a job as the Associate Head Coach at Stevens Institute of Technology.  Twomey helped the team to a record of 73-37 in four seasons with the Ducks.  He was named the head coach at Centenary College at the start of the 2012-13 season, guiding the Cyclones to a record of 13-13 and an appearance in the Colonial States Athletic Conference tournament.

Twomey resides in Hoboken with his wife, Emily, and daughter, Lillian.

Favorite moments at the Mount: “Two moments really stick out for me.  The first was when we beat Manhattanville in the conference semifinals during my senior year.  We were losing for just about the entire game and (Mike) Hoyt hit a three at the buzzer to force overtime.  I hit a jumper to give us the lead at the start of OT and we went on to win, 71-64.  That was the best crowd I’ve seen for a game and I’ve been going to Mount games for about the last 20 years.”

“The other moment was when I broke the scoring record.  It’s kind of ironic that I broke the scoring record against Centenary College and now I’m the head coach there.  What I remember most from that game was all the support from my family and friends.  I must’ve had 75-plus people there to see me break the record.  I didn’t think it was a big deal when I was a player, but looking back on it now, it was pretty cool to hold a record like that.”

How did your time at the Mount prepare you for your career: “Obviously, playing at the Mount has prepared me well for my coaching profession.  Being a part of great teams and playing in big games in tough environments will only help me in my coaching career.  I feel one way to improve as a player or coach is to gain as much experience in these types of situations.”
