One of the most decorated players in the Baseball program’s history, Joseph Monserrat enters the Hall of Fame the holder of three records that have not been touched in better than two decades.

Over a four year career with the Mount, Joseph appeared in 120 games and hit an impressive .352 in 420 at-bats. He scored 154 runs, recorded 148 base hits, ripped 20 triples, hit 17 doubles and drove in 77 runs. He stole 132 bases for the Mount in 142 attempts, the all-time record at Mount Saint Mary, and as a junior in 1994 set the single season record after swiping 46 bags without being caught.

Joseph holds a .531 slugging percentage and an impressive .478 on-base percentage. His marks for single season and career steals and his single season record of 58 runs scored in 1994 are still records at Mount Saint Mary. His mark for runs per game in 1994 led the country and his mark for steals per game ranked him fourth nationally.

In addition to individual accolades that saw him earn First Team All-Knickerbocker Conference honors three times as well as First Team All-Skyline Conference accolades and ABCA First Team All-Region honors in 1995, the Baseball team claimed the Knickerbocker Tournament title in 1994 and the Skyline Conference Championship in 1995.

One of Joseph’s proudest moments as student-athlete happened in 1994 at Shea Stadium, when the Mount played John Jay for the Knickerbocker Conference Championship. He led off the game with a single, stole second, moved to third on a ground out and then scored the game’s only run on a sacrifice fly.

“Matt Dembinsky pitched the game of his life and we got to celebrate a 1-0 victory on the infield grass.”

Joseph also recalls the evolution of the program over his four year career. The program went from practicing in the “old gym”- no heat, no running water to the current Kaplan Center. The program improved to a level of respectability where it was competing for conference championships every year. The other thing that stands out as a MSMC alum are the relationships that were created with teammates. Some of the most fun we had took place on those spring trips to North Carolina and those games at Shea Stadium.
