Michael Schmidt helped turn the Mount baseball program into a perennial winner over the course of his career and had a hand in the Mount's Knickerbocker Conference Championship during his junior campaign. During that year, Schmidt posted an 8-1 record on the mound, allowing only 29 base hits in 68 innings of work. He struck out 72 batters and posted a sterling 1.06 earned run average.
Â
Schmidt worked a complete game one-hitter against a 33-3 Western Connecticut team to get the Mount to championship game where it topped Lehman, 6-5. Against the Lightning, Schmidt earned the win on the mound and drove in half of the team's six runs, including the deciding RBI.
Â
A year later as a senior, Schmidt led the Knights back to the conference championship where it fell, but earned a bid into the prestigious ECAC Tournament. Following two of the strongest seasons for the Knights in program history, Schmidt was tabbed an All-Knickerbocker selection.

'Being a student-athlete gave me the confidence and experience to go out and do my best. I hated to lose on the field, and I still carry that attitude in everything I do today whether it is work related or extracurricular activities. At 47, I still pitch and while I may not throw as hard, I am smarter from each experience I had growing up, graduating and moving through life with a family," commented Schmidt.
Â
Those life lessons he has passed on to his oldest son who is attending Quinnipiac. "I encouraged him to get involved. Join intramurals, the clubs, band, college groups etc... It is the fastest way to make friends who have things in common with you and it speeds the process of getting accustom to life away from your parents. For me, being a student athlete helped me feel confident when giving student tours prior to graduation and to speak about student life in a manner that I truly experienced. I learned never to get discouraged when I hear the answer "No" or "you can't do that". These responses only make me want to work harder to achieve my goals. These basic skills I picked up along the way at the Mount helped me reach the level I am today in the workforce," he added.

Michael recalls the friendships and bonds that were formed during his time at the Mount and also feels it important to acknowledge the support he received from the professors and administrators. Dr. Sarro, Dr. Nunnari, Randy Ognibene, Michael McGuire, Elaine O'Grady, and Dean Steinway to name a few, who always went out of their way to assist us as students and push us to do better not only in sports but life.
