Mount Saint Mary Athletics Hall of Fame
Mary Ann Raftery put together one of the most productive careers in Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball program history and in the process led the Mount to its first, and to date, only appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Â
Mary Ann finished her career with the Knights appearing in 350 sets and produced 935 kills, averaging nearly three winners per set, to go along with 115 service aces, 89 total blocks and an impressive 1,021 digs, averaging just under three digs per stanza.
Â
Mary Ann graduated as the Mount's all-time leader in kills, a mark that stood until the 2016 campaign, and picked up Second Team All-Skyline Conference honors as a junior. Mary Ann capped her career by being named First Team All-Skyline Conference as a senior and was tabbed the Skyline Conference Championship Most Outstanding Player.
Â
Mary Ann will enter the Mount's Hall of Fame second in program history in kills and as one of only six players to reach 1,000 digs in a career.
Â
Among her many achievements at the Mount, Mary Ann recalls the support she received across departments while a student-athlete as well as the long bus rides that included ridiculous movies, bagel mornings, fast food stops and endless laughs.
Â
Also involved in the community, Mary Ann teamed with three of her classmates: Dylan McCann, Teresa Conigliaro, and Jess Feerick, for their senior seminar project, MSMC Supports the 343. The group held a charity alumni basketball game for a fellow classmate's father who was one of 343 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11. The project raised $5,000 dollars in scholarship money for an incoming freshman.
Â
Among her proudest moments as a Knight, Mary Ann recalls breaking the career kills record, being named the NYU Invitational All-Tournament Team, guiding the Mount to the NCAA Tournament and leading the team will fellow Co-Captain and MSMC Hall of Fame member Lauren Halverson.
Â
"Being a part of a team at such a competitive level has helped me recognize when to take the lead and when to take a step back and let others lead. The transferable skills from playing a sport in college to my career, has helped me now that I am in a manger role," states Raftery.
Â
Upon graduation, Mary Ann moved back to Long Island and began working for Gerson Lerham Group, a professional learning platform that services financial institutions. In 2016, she moved on to work for Brighwood Capital as a Senior Associate on the Client Service Business Development Team. Brightwood Capital provides debt and equity capital solutions to US based companies, specifically investing in Family, Founder, and Entrepreneur led businesses.
Â
Currently, Mary Ann resides in Long Beach, N.Y. with Mount Men's Basketball alumni Christopher Pisciotta.
