Men’s Basketball Opens Season At Nazareth Tip-Off Tournament

Knights begin regular season Saturday night in Rochester, N.Y.

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Basketball team will travel to Rochester, N.Y. to open the 2016-17 season on Saturday at the Nazareth Tip-Off Tournament. The Knights will tussle with the host Golden Flyers at 8:00 p.m. tomorrow night and will take on either Morrisville State or Valley Forge on Sunday afternoon. Live Stats and Video will be available for those who cannot attend the tournament.
 
At A Glance: Mount Saint Mary is coming off a 2015-16 season that saw it post an 8-17 overall record and a 6-14 mark against league rivals. The Knights welcome back eight of their top nine scorers from a season ago and add five talented newcomers to the mix this season.
 
Daniel Wolff (Holtsville, N.Y.) paced the Mount last season in scoring and rebounding with 10.6 points per night and just shy of six caroms per outing. Gerard Nocera (Holmdel, N.J.) was also good for double-figures last season, scoring just over 10 points per game for the Knights.
 
Sophomore T.J. Patsaols (Newburgh, N.Y.) started 15 games for the Mount as a freshman and contributed 8.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, with Tyler McDine (Suffern, N.Y.) handing out a team-high 88 assists, while averaging 7.4 points per night.
 
Last Time Out: The Knights took the floor on Tuesday for an exhibition contest at nearby Division I Army West Point. The Black Knights came away with a 91-53 victory in their second contest of the season after shooting just shy of 48-percent from the floor. Army hit 15 triples in the game and outscored the Mount by 11 in second chance opportunities.
 
Patsalos led three Knights in double-figures with 14 points with Nocera and Wolff adding 11 and 10 respectively. McDine led the team with three assists in the contest.
 
Scouting Nazareth: The Golden Flyers posted an impressive 63-57 road win at Oswego on Tuesday. The Lakers, were received 74 votes in the preseason D3hoops.com Top-25 poll, were held to 31-percent shooting by Nazareth. Tyler Stenglein led the offensive attack with 22 points on 9-for-17 shooting with Josh Gillard chipping in with 11 points.
 
Brendan Wind handed out 10 assists in the win against just one turnover and Jake Burgio hauled in a team-high eight rebounds. The Golden Flyers finished the game shooting 41-percent from the floor and knocked down six three-point field goals.
 
A Look At Morrisville State: The Mustangs enter the weekend at 1-0 after posting a 71-67 victory over Utica in their season opener on Tuesday. Morrisville State shot 45.3-percent for the game and hauled in 20 offensive rebounds as part of a 48-32 advantage on the glass.
 
Kevin Dennis exploded for 31 points for Morrisville State on 13-for-18 shooting and closed a double-double effort with 13 rebounds. Kyle Peck contributed 10 points in the win and Michel Turner came off the bench to chip in with eight points and nine boards. Kenny Bonaparte finished off a solid all-around night with four points, five rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals.
 
Previewing The Patriots: Like the Knights, Valley Forge will open the 2016-17 season Saturday when they tussle with Morrisville State in the opening game of the tournament. The Patriots posted an 8-21 record a season ago and return nine players from last year's squad, including Thorne McIntosh who was good for 10 points per game. Devin Williams also returns after scoring 13 points a night for Valley Forge last season.
 
What's Next: Following two games at Nazareth, the Mount will close a three game road trip to open the season on November 22 when it travels to Manhattanville. Tip-off with the Valiants in Purchase, N.Y. is set for 7:00 p.m.
