Women’s Volleyball Drops 3-0 Sweep to Ramapo

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – In its first match at home of the 2014 campaign, the Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball team (2-3) fell to Ramapo College (4-1) in a 3-0 (25-18, 28-26, 25-18) sweep at the Kaplan Center Wednesday evening.
 
The first set was neck-and-neck as both teams were tied at 8-8, but the Roadrunners went on a 10-4 run to take an 18-12 lead. The Knights rallied back to cut the deficit to just two at 19-17, but the visitors took six of the next seven points to take the opening game.
 
The Knights looked to be in control late in the second stanza, holding onto a 20-17 lead, but the Roadrunners came speeding back to take a 23-20 edge. Four straight kills for the Knights put them up by one, but both teams would trade points until the set was tied at 26 apiece. Ramapo was able to gather up the last three points and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
The Knights trailed by a point in the third set at 13-12 before the Roadrunners went on a 9-1 run to take a commanding 22-13 lead. The Knights rallied back to take four of the next five points, but Ramapo managed to close it out at 25-18 before the Knights could get back in the game, closing out the match in the process.
 
Ramapo's Larysa Iwaskiw led all scorers with nine kills on the evening, while Cathryn Smart added five with a .333 hitting percentage. Kaitlin Mac Iver provided 20 assists for the Roadrunners.
 
Junior outside hitter Kayla Kurka (Islip, N.Y.) and sophomore outside hitter Rachel Sabatini (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) matched for a team-high six kills Wednesday evening. Senior middle blocker Natalie Candarelli (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) was right behind them with five to go along with a .286 hitting percentage on the night. Sophomore setter Claire Scully dished out a match-high 21 assists, while freshman libero Chelsea Barberan (Fishkill, N.Y.) picked up 19 digs to lead all scorers.
 
Ramapo played the more efficient game, hitting .125 compared to just .020 for the Knights. Both teams matched with a total of 26 kills, but the Roadrunners made 14 errors to the Knights' 24.
 
The Knights will look to bounce back when they head to Union, N.J. this weekend to participate in the Kean Cougar Classic, hosted by Kean University. The Mount takes on Centenary College (N.J.) at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, before taking on Frostburg State University at 6 p.m. They will then take on the tournament host Kean at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, and then face off with Skyline Conference rival Farmingdale State College at 12 p.m. in a non-conference matchup.
