Women's Volleyball Concludes Regular Season With Home Tri-match

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball team lost both of its matches in its home tri-match.

(Match 1)

Mount Saint Mary opened up the day against New Jersey City University, getting off to a solid start with an 8-5 lead after a Nicolette Pirro ace. The Knights held the lead for the remainder of the set, but never led by more than 4 points. Brooke Lavelle and Jonaiya Williams played big roles in the Mount's offense in the set. Ava DiScala would be set up by Vanessa Seymour to win the first set 25-23.

The Knights trailed early on in the second set, but would slowly make their way back into it to tie things up 12-12. NJCU would go up 19-15 before Isabella Montemagno would check in to serve and help Mount Saint Mary retake the lead 20-19. The Gothic Knights ended the set on a 6-2 run to pull out the second set win 25-22 and tie the match up.

Sofia Fredericks got the Knights off to a 5-0 run to begin the third set with a couple of aces. Mount Saint Mary held a lead for a majority of the set, leading by as much as 6 points. A 9-2 run from NJCU flipped the script as the Gothic Knights would go up 21-19. The Mount was unable to recover as Jersey City finished off the set and won 25-22.

Mount Saint Mary needed to respond to stay alive, and did just that after being down 6-2 to start. A 7-1 run, sparked by 4 Julianna Simone kills, put the Knights right back into the thick of things. The Mount took the lead and were up 19-16 before the Gothic Knights looked to come back and tied it up 19-19. Mount Saint Mary needed a big finish to the set, and they did just that, outscoring NJCU 6-3 to win the set 25-22 to force a fifth set.

Jersey City took control to begin the fifth set, taking an 8-2 lead before switching sides. The Mount could not find an answer for the Gothic Knights' offense, as they were unable to score more than one point in a row. NJCU would win the deciding set 15-6 and the match 3-2. 

(Match 2)
The Knights looked to come away with at least one victory today as they took on John Jay, who was just fresh off a win over NJCU. The Bloodhounds jumped out of the gate with a 9-0 run and a 10-2 lead. The Mount slowly began to chip away at their lead with Jonaiya Williams providing 3 straight aces to make it 19-15 John Jay. Back-to-back kills from Erin Lema and Nicolette Pirro cut their deficit to just 3 points, but the Bloodhounds ended up winning the first set 25-20.

Mount Saint Mary had a much better start to the second set, taking an early lead and going up 11-7. John Jay responded with 5 unanswered points before going up 16-13. The Knights responded with 5 unanswered points of their own, sparked by Ava DiScala, as part of a 10-1 run. With their big offensive push late in the set, the Knights would tie up the match after a 25-20 second-set victory.

A 7-0 run from the Bloodhounds in the early going of the third set gave them a 9-2 lead before the Knights answered the call with a 6-0 run of their own. John Jay began to open up their lead midway through the set, going up 17-12. The Mount would trail 22-15 late in the set, but a run sparked by Erin Lema put the Knights right back into things. Trailing just 23-21, Mount Saint Mary looked to steal the set from the Bloodhounds, though they would come up just short, 25-22.

John Jay repeated their strong start to open up the fourth set, taking an 8-2 lead. The Knights were able to respond as Jonaiya Williams and Julianna Simone helped to tie things up 12-12. The Mount's offense stalled from here with the Bloodhounds controlling for the remainder of the set as they won 25-18.
