Women’s Volleyball Drops Skyline Match to Sage, 3-1

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball team (8-14, 3-1 Skyline) lost its first Skyline Conference match of the season to The Sage Colleges (9-14, 4-0 Skyline), 3-1 (25-20, 18-25, 21-25, 21-25), Wednesday evening at the Kaplan Center.

The Knights started off hot, taking the first set of the match, 25-20. The game was neck-and-neck, with the score tied late at 18-18, but the Knights finished off the Gators with a 7-2 run to take the opening set.

Sage took control early in the second stanza, jumping out to an 18-11 lead. The Knights fought back to cut the score to 22-18, but the Gators took the last three points to even the match.

The third frame, like the rest of the match, was very tight. The set was tied, 19-19, before the Gators went on a 6-2 stretch to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

The fourth set was almost a carbon copy of the third, with Sage leading 20-19 before winning five of the final seven points to take the match.

The Gators were led by Helen Putriment, who threw down a match-high 15 kills, as well as 20 digs. Katelyn Drollette edged out Putriment with 22 digs, while Joanie Cooney dished out 36 assists. As a whole, Sage hit at a .169 clip for the match.

Freshman outside hitter Rachel Sabatini (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) led the Knights with 11 kills on the night. Freshman setter Claire Scully (Bloomfield, N.J.) provided 33 assists, while sophomore libero Jen Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) picked up a match-best 26 digs. The Knights finished with a hitting percentage of .045.

The Knights return to action on Saturday, Oct. 12, when they host a Skyline Conference quad-match at the Kaplan Center. They will take on Farmingdale State College in the day's opening match at 10 a.m., and then finish off the day with the 4 p.m. match against St. Joseph's College (L.I.). The College of Mount Saint Vincent will also be participating in Saturday's events.
