Women’s Volleyball Goes 2-1 at NJCU Quad Match

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball team (13-17, 4-2 Skyline) went home with two wins and one loss at the New Jersey City University October Quad Match on Saturday, falling to SUNYIT (28-4), 3-0 (26-28, 11-25, 13-25), before defeating NJCU (6-25), 3-2 (25-22, 21-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-13), and Immaculata University (9-16), 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 25-16, 22-25, 15-9).

The Knights suffered a shutout loss to SUNYIT despite hitting .124 in the match. SUNYIT overpowered the Knights with a hitting percentage of .330.

The Knights bounced back in their second match, earning a hard-fought five-set victory over NJCU. The Knights were down 2-1 in the match before reeling in the final two sets. Junior outside hitter Katie Lynch (Island Park, N.Y.) led the Knights with 13 kills, while sophomore middle blocker Kayla Kurka (Islip, N.Y.) had 12 kills, a hitting percentage of .357 and eight service aces. Freshman setter Claire Scully (Bloomfield, N.J.) led with 26 assists, while freshman setter Kristen Maddock (Medford, N.Y.) dished out another 18. Sophomore right side Kaitlin O'Brien (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a nice defensive effort with 14 digs.

The day went as long as it could, as the Knights fought to pick up another five-set victory in their final match against Immaculata. Freshman outside hitter Rachel Sabatini (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) threw down 19 kills for the Knights, while Kurka added another 11. Scully matched her season high with 45 assists. Sophomore libero Jen Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) led the Knights with 19 digs.

The Knights conclude what has already been a grueling weekend with a pair of Skyline Conference matches tomorrow, Oct. 27, at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. The Mount takes on Mount Saint Vincent at 10 a.m. before challenging Purchase College at 12 p.m.
