WAYNE, N.J. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball team (10-16) split their two matches on Saturday, defeating Brooklyn College (10-14), 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-17) in the opener, and then falling a few points short of a miraculous comeback against host William Paterson University (16-5), taking a 3-2 (22-25, 19-25, 25-21, 26-24, 11-15) defeat in their final match.
The Knights played a very efficient match against Brooklyn to open their day. As a team, they hit a .338 clip in the win, while holding Brooklyn to a .017 hitting percentage. Junior outside hitter
Katie Lynch (Island Park, N.Y.) threw down a season-high 14 kills and hit at a .346 rate. Sophomore right side
Maribeth Powers (Yorktown, N.Y.) followed with nine kills and an astounding hitting percentage of .571. Freshman setter
Claire Scully (Bloomfield, N.J.) dished out 31 assists for a season-high rate of 10.3 assists per set.
The Knights scratched and clawed their way back into their second match after falling behind two sets to none. Facing defeat, they took the third set, 25-21. Down 22-18 late in the fourth set, a 6-0 run put the Knights back up by two points. William Paterson managed to tie it up at 24-24, but the Knights took the last two points to force a fifth set. The Mount held an 11-5 edge in the final set, but the Pioneers went on an unbelievable stretch to take the last 10 points of the match and grab the win.
William Paterson held a .164 to .106 edge in hitting percentage in the day's final match. Mary Long recorded a match-high 20 kills, while Erin Roach followed close behind with 18 of her own. Freshman outside hitter
Rachel Sabatini (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) led the Knights with 12 kills, while Lynch picked up another nine in the loss. Lynch also led the team with 16 digs. Scully set a new season-high in the match with 45 assists. She added 10 digs for a double-double, and also served up six aces.
The Knights return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 23, when they travel to Bard College for a non-conference matchup with the Raptors. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
