Box Score
NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Despite strong play by Mount goalkeeper
Matt Darling (Staatsburg, N.Y.), the Knights gave up three second half goals to fall, 3-0, to Scranton University. The Knights drop to 2-4 on the year, while the Royals remain undefeated as they improve to 5-0.
Without placing a shot on goal throughout the first, the Knights nearly took a 1-0 lead in the waning seconds of the half when freshman Stephen Ehresman (Whitestone, N.Y.) ripped a shot from the top of box that was saved by Scranton keeper James Dillon (Downington, Pa.). The Royals held an 8-2 advantage in shots in the first, but Darling made four saves to preserve the deadlock.
The Royals broke through for their first goal of the day in the 64th minute, as senior Matthew Salvatore (Howell, N.J.) dribbled past a Mount defender on the endline. Salvatore crossed the ball to the middle of the box, where sophomore Rich Loeffler (Matawan, N.J.) directed the ball into the back of the net at the far post. Just five minutes later, Scranton added on their second of the day, when freshman Michael Romano (Freehold, N.J.) collected a loose ball and fired it under Darling towards the near post.
With the Mount pushing forward in the closing minutes of the game, the Royals capitalized on a loose ball in the midfield and tacked on their third of the game. Darling came out to break up the play and Romano was able to send a pass ahead to junior Nick Paganelli (Ossining, N.Y.) who then scored on an empty net.
Darling was a bright spot for the Knights, finishing with 10 saves. Dillon recorded two saves for the Royals.
The Knights look to rebound from back-to-back losses, as they travel to Bard College on Wednesday, September 19. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
