NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Mount goalkeeper
Matt Darling (Staatsburg, N.Y.) sealed the win for the Knights, making two critical saves in the closing five minutes of the game to preserve their 1-0 lead, as the Mount topped Maritime in the Skyline Conference quarterfinal game. The Knights improve to 10-7-1 on the year, while the Privateers conclude their season with an overall record of 8-12-1.
In the opening minutes of play, the freshman duo of
Alex Tolman (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and
Michael Ennis (Carmel, N.Y.) proved to be dangerous. Fifteen minutes into the half, a pass by Tolman set up Ennis for a
one-on-one, but Maritime goalkeeper Karl Weber (Northport, N.Y.) was up the test. Less than three minutes later and on an almost identical play, Ennis dribbled across the box and finished a shot above Weber into the top right corner to put the Knights up 1-0.
Both teams continued to battle throughout the second half and the Knights had two opportunities to add an insurance goal. A quick restart set up junior
Brandon Mincher (Bayport, N.Y.) for a goal, but Weber charged and broke up the play. Around the eight minute mark, junior
Sean Barton (Wallkill, N.Y.) streaked down the field with a breakaway and a long touch ahead by Barton was kicked away by the Maritime defense to keep the Privateers trailing by just one.
With just over five minutes remaining in the game, Maritime senior Chris Anderson (Manorville, N.Y.) sent a corner kick sailing into the box. Maritime freshman Robert Cunningham (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) headed the ball towards the net and Darling was forced to punch the ball away and over the crossbar. As the clock ticked down in the final seconds, Darling made another critical save, knocking a shot from Anderson over the crossbar to solidify the win for the Knights.
Darling finished with three saves, while Weber tallied seven.
The Knights will travel to Sage for a Skyline Conference semifinal game that will be played at Saint Rose's Plumeri Complex. The game will be played on Wednesday, October 31 at a time to be announced.
