Valdez Double-Double Boosts Mount to Eighth Straight Win

Box Score

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Mount Saint Mary College senior Carlos Valdez (Carolina, Puerto Rico) scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead his team to a 74-60 Skyline Conference win over Yeshiva University on Wednesday evening.  The Knights (13-4, 8-2 Skyline) have now won eight straight games, while the Maccabees (2-13, 2-7 Skyline) have lost seven straight.

The Mount jumped out to an early lead, scoring 10 of the game's first 12 points.  Yeshiva would cut the deficit back to two at the 8:13 mark of the half (17-15), but the Knights closed the half on a 19-7 run and led 36-22 at the break.

The Maccabees would claw back to within three with just 6:39 to play in the second half.  The Knights had the answer once again, as back-to-back three-pointers from sophomores Joe Stabach (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Chris Pisciotta (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) capped an 8-0 run to make it 61-50, Knights.  Yeshiva got as close as seven over the final minutes, but never really threatened again.

Valdez led all scorers with 16 points on 5-of-9 from the field.  The senior also hit on 6-of-8 at the line.  Pisciotta added 11 points, as did senior Kevin Milella (Floral Park, N.Y.).  The Knights struggled to find the range for most of the evening, hitting on just 39.3-percent from the field as a team.  They did, however, make 24-of-29 (82.8-percent) attempts at the charity stripe.

Junior Gil Bash (Tel Aviv, Israel) led Yeshiva with 15 points on 6-of-13 from the field.  Fellow junior Dovie Hoffman (Tarzana, Calif.) scored 13 points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds.  The Macs shot 42.1-percent from the field, but made only 4-of-16 from long range.

The Knights travel to Farmingdale State College for a showdown with the second place Rams on Saturday, January 28.  Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. following the conclusion of the women's game.
