NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The defending Skyline Conference champions lived up to their reputation on Wednesday night, as Maritime College defeated Mount Saint Mary College, 2-0, on Kaplan Field. The Knights dropped to 4-4-1 overall (2-1-0 Skyline), while the Privateers moved to 7-2-2 overall (3-0-0 Skyline).
After a scoreless first half, Maritime freshman Oliver Garcia Ortiz (North Bergen, N.J.) broke through with a free kick in the 59th minute. His shot from 22 yards beat the Mount goalkeeper at the left post to give the Privateers a 1-0 lead.
The Knights missed a golden opportunity to tie the game in the 63rd minute. Junior
Matt Pagano (Mahopac, N.Y.) challenged a loose ball near the top of the box and poked a shot over the keeper's head. Unfortunately, the shot spun away from the frame, sneaking just by the right post.
Less than three minutes later, freshman Raphael Tavares (Belleville, N.J.) added an insurance goal for Maritime following a cross from senior Tom Federico (Islip, N.Y.). Federico's cross from the right side found Tavares and he finished with a shot back to the far post.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Matt Darling (Staatsburg, N.Y.) made four saves in the losing effort.
The Knights open Skyline play on Saturday and will host Purchase College at 12:00 p.m.
