Yeshiva Downs Mount for Final Skyline Spot

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Yeshiva sophomore Chen Biron (Kfar Saba, Israel) scored a game-high 29 points, including seven three-pointers, to lead his team to an 81-68 victory over Mount Saint Mary College on Thursday night. The Maccabees moved to 11-13 overall (10-9 Skyline) and clinched the final Skyline tournament spot, while the Knights fell to 10-14 (9-10 Skyline) and were eliminated from postseason contention.

Leading by six at the half, Yeshiva pushed their lead to twelve with a Biron three-pointer at the 15:14 mark. The Knights rallied with an 11-0 run to make the score 48-47, but the Maccabees responded with the next six, including a pair of acrobatic layups by senior Martin Leibovich (Buenos Aires, Argentina).

Yeshiva sophomore Omer Haim (Rishon Lizion, Israel) drilled a long three-pointer to send the lead back to double digits (63-53) at the 6:36 mark. Leibovich followed with a putback two to make it twelve, but the Knights weren't done just yet. Sophomore Kevin Milella (Floral Park, N.Y.) banked home a layup to cut it to ten and then sophomore Carlos Valdez (Slate Hill, N.Y.) dunked home an opportunity on the fast break to make it 65-57.

After trading free throws, freshman Lenny Ragaglia (Staten Island, N.Y.) came off the bench and swished a triple to cut the deficit to five (66-61). Unfortunately, it would be as close as the Knights would get. Yeshiva scored the next six points and escaped for good. The Macs continued to make free throws down the stretch and eventually settled in for the 81-68 victory.

Biron was lights out for Yeshiva for the entire evening. The sophomore connected on 7-of-10 attempts from behind the arc and finished 10-for-17 from the field. Leibovich also turned in a nice performance, totaling 22 points and 12 rebounds. Haim put on a show from the point guard position, racking up 7 assists to go along with 12 points, 5 boards, and 4 steals.

Milella led the Knights with 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting. The sophomore also grabbed 8 rebounds. Valdez finished with 14 points and 8 rebounds, but it was a relatively quiet night for him. Junior Tim Morris (Greenwich, N.Y.) also reached double figures with 10.

Mount Saint Mary's defense couldn't stop Yeshiva for most of the night. The Maccabees shot 60.0-percent for the game and 9-of-17 from three. The Knights, on the other hand, connected at 43.6-percent from the field.

Eliminated from Skyline Conference playoff contention, Mount Saint Mary will close out the season on Saturday, February 20. They'll host Farmingdale State College starting at 4:30 p.m.
