NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Remaining on pace for the first twenty-win season in program history, the Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball team defeated Rutgers-Newark in five sets on Tuesday evening. The Knights improved to 18-9 overall with two matches remaining in the regular season.
The Mount captured the first two sets (25-16 & 25-22), but struggled in set three as the Scarlet Raiders made the match, 2-1, with a 25-20 victory. The fourth set featured 15 ties and eight lead changes, but it would be Rutgers-Newark would pull even with a 25-23 triumph. With the Knights leading 8-6 in the deciding set, junior
Courtney Kenney (Hicksville, N.Y.) served the final seven points to give her team the victory.
Junior
Jacqueline Nadeau (Uniondale, N.Y.) was the star for the Knights, racking up 14 kills to go along with 24 digs. Freshman
Kaylene Pennings (Minisink, N.Y.) reached double-digit kills for the third match in row, this time posting 12 kills on 25 attempts. Freshman
Mary Ann Raftery (Atlantic Beach, N.Y.) also played a strong match, finishing with nine kills and 14 digs.
Sophomore
Lauren Halverson (Patchogue, N.Y.) continued to run the offense well for the Mount and finished the match with 39 assists. She also collected 14 digs, four kills, and a pair of blocks. Senior
Elizabeth Douress (Rahway, N.J.) added a team-high four blocks to go along with seven kills.
The Knights return to action on Wednesday with a home match against Sarah Lawrence College. Play begins at 7:00 p.m.
