NEW PALTZ, NY – At the highly competitive New Paltz Invitational, the Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball team split four matches, defeating Rutgers-Newark and New Jersey City while losing to Johnson and Wales and Johns Hopkins. The Blue Knights are 5-7 overall.
Mount Saint Mary defeated Rutgers-Newark in straight sets (25-22, 25-14, 25-16). Sophomore
Courtney Kenney (Hicksville, N.Y.) had a team high 6 kills and sophomore
Heather Schaeffer (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) had 15 digs.
Against Johnson and Wales, the Blue Knights lost in straight sets (25-12, 25-11, 25-15). Junior
Elizabeth Douress (Rahway, N.J.) tallied four kills against only one error. Schaeffer recorded a match-high 10 digs.
During Sunday's match with New Jersey City University, Mount Saint Mary finished with 37 kills against only 20 errors. The Blue Knights won in straight sets (25-19, 25-19, 25-22). Kenney had a team-high 9 kills, but sophomore
Teresa Sorrentino (Bellerose, N.Y.) was right behind her with 8 kills and 10 digs. Schaeffer was best defensively again, finishing with 16 digs.
Johns Hopkins proved to be a very tough opponent in the final match of the invitational, defeating the Mount in three sets (25-15, 25-16, 25-14). Kenney and Sorrentino each had 6 kills. Senior
Katie Toole (Wallkill, N.Y.) closed out the weekend with 21 assists.
At the conclusion of the invitational, Toole was honored on the all-tournament team. She finished with 79 assists in four matches.
Up next for Mount Saint Mary is their first Skyline Conference contest. The Blue Knights will travel to the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. start.
