NEWARK, N.J. – Junior forward Christien Vlahinich had a goal and an assist to help Rutgers-Newark to a 4-1 win over Mount Saint Mary College on Alumni Field as the Scarlet Raiders equaled the school record for victories in a season. The Blue Knights dropped to 6-8-1 overall.
Freshman midfielder Chris DeFalco, junior forward Innocent Buule and sophomore forward Richie Villamar also notched goals as the Raiders improved to 12-3-4 on the season with the non-conference win.
Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Lindberg made five saves to record the win as the Raiders constructed a 20-10 edge in shots and took all five of the corner kicks in the contest.
DeFalco scored the only goal of the opening half on a chip into the front of the box by sophomore midfielder Tom King in the 35th minute.
Buule came off the bench to open the second period and scored the game-winner by gathering a through pass from midfield by junior midfielder Raphael Ventura, beating the keeper with a move at the top of the 18 and walking the ball into the net in the 62nd minute.
Senior
Jack Benenati (Dix Hills, N.Y.) put away a hard cross of a defender in front of the Raider goal in the 82nd minute to bring the Blue Knights back into the match before Vlahinich had a hand in two lightning response goals to put the contest away.
Rutgers-Newark scored twice in a minute and a half. Just 48 seconds after the Mount Saint Mary goal, Vlahinich made a throw in from the right side which Villamar put away for his team-high seventh goal of the season. Vlahinich then beat the goalkeeper on a breakaway run off of feed from junior midfielder Matt Tatro to end the suspense.
Mount Saint Mary closes out their season on Sunday when they host Yeshiva University. The game is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
