NEWBURGH, NY – York College freshman Elysee Vilsaint (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) scored in the 109th minute of the game on Saturday, sending the Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team to a 2-1 defeat. The Blue Knights dropped to 1-3 overall while the Cardinals improved to 2-1.
An innocent clearing attempt by the York defense quickly turned into the game-winning goal as Vilsaint ran onto the ball at full speed and avoided two Mount defenders on his way to the goal. Once inside the box, the freshman made a quick move to his left and slid the ball past a charging goalkeeper. It was his sixth goal of the season in just three games.
Mount Saint Mary College tied the game in the 57th minute as
Jon Gasiewski (New Milford, Conn.) tallied his second goal of the season. After some continued pressure by the Blue Knights, Gasiewski won the ball from a York defender and managed to find the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
York's first goal came in the closing minutes of the first half. Kurtney Peter played a nice cross from the right side and freshman Michel Nicolas (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) scissor kicked a shot into the net.
Mount Saint Mary senior
Jon Giordano (Newburgh, N.Y.) nearly ended the game right after the whistle to start the second overtime. Giordano struck a laser shot from outside the box that drilled the crossbar and bounced back out into the field.
Junior goalkeeper
Paul Aries (Nashua, N.H.) bailed out the Blue Knights on several occasions, most notably in the first half as he made a beautiful save on a breakaway attempt by Vilsaint in the 35th minute. Aries finished with 10 saves on the afternoon.
Mount Saint Mary returns to action tomorrow against the Culinary Institute of America, 5-1 losers today to SUNY College at Old Westbury. The Mount's game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
