Mount Earns First Playoff Win Ever, Defeats Maritime 2-0

NEWBURGH, NY – Hosting a Skyline Conference tournament game for the first time in program history, the Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team also picked up their first ever Skyline playoff win on Tuesday evening, defeating Maritime College, 2-0. The third-seeded Blue Knights improved to 10-8-0 and will play second-seeded St. Joseph's College on Thursday in the conference semifinals. The Privateers finished their season at 8-11-2.

Scoreless after the opening 45 minutes and with Maritime outshooting them 8-6, Mount Saint Mary finally broke through on the scoreboard in the 54th minute. After entering the game for the first time just two minutes earlier, junior John Como (Wingdale, N.Y.) took a pass from senior Francis Amarteifio (Accra, Ghana) and blasted a low shot past the Maritime goalkeeper. Amarteifio split the Maritime defense in the middle of the field and then slid a nice diagonal pass to the right side. Como ran onto the pass and buried the ball in the back of the net.

Just six minutes later, senior Nick Morse (New Milford, Conn.) added an insurance goal for the Blue Knights. After taking a pass from senior Andy Espinoza (Mount Kisco, N.Y.), Morse took a dribble to his right and then launched an excellent shot that caught the upper right corner of the net.

The Privateers actually outshot the Blue Knights in the game, 18-14, but a stout defensive effort for the Mount limited the quality chances for the visitors. Junior Paul Aries (Nashua, N.H.) made 11 saves for the Blue Knights and earned his third shutout of the season.

Thursday's semifinal game between Mount Saint Mary and St. Joseph's will take place at Patchogue-Medford High School and is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start.
