Newburgh, N.Y. - A jumper from senior
Divine Jackson (Hempstead, N.Y.) that bounced all around the rim before finally dropping through proved to be the game-winner Saturday afternoon, as Old Westbury went on to a 65-63 Skyline victory over Mount Saint Mary College. The Panthers, playing in their Skyline opener, are now 2-3 overall while the Blue Knights fell to 2-3 overall and 1-1 inside the league.
After taking a 2-0 lead to start the game, the Mount did not lead again until the final minute. Trailing by four with a minute to play, freshman Scott Henderson (Baldwin, N.Y.) drained a three-pointer, from the corner and over a screen, to bring the Blue Knights to within one. Henderson was fouled on the next possession and put on the line, where he calmly drained two free throws to give MSMC their first lead since the opening basket. Jackson scored on the next possession for the Panthers, but not before Old Westbury came up with two big offensive rebounds. The Mount couldn't score on either of their final two possessions, missing a shot at the buzzer to tie, and Old Westbury hung on for the road victory.
Freshman Matt Weinberger (Washingtonville, N.Y.) was excellent for Mount Saint Mary, scoring a game-high 22 points. The first-year player shot 6-of-9 from the field and drilled all five of his three-point attempts to keep the Mount in the game. Sophomore Chris Harrison (Baldwin, N.Y.) continued his very strong season with another solid performance, finishing the day with 16 points and 13 rebounds. The junior also had five blocks, pushing his season total to 13 in just five games.
Freshman Lester Prosper (Bellmore, N.Y.) had the best day for the Panthers, concluding the game with 18 points, 11 boards, and five blocked shots. Senior Ian Johnson (Jamaica, N.Y.) led Old Westbury in scoring with 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 5-of-6 from three-point land.
Up next for Mount Saint Mary is another Skyline contest, this time on the road at Yeshiva. Tip-off on Tuesday, December 4 is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Old Westbury will host Mount Saint Vincent on December 4, also beginning at 8:00 p.m.
