Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team will make its first ever appearance in the Skyline Conference Championship Final on Saturday when it travels to top-seeded USMMA for a chance to represent the league in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. At A Glance: The Knights outlasted Maritime 14-13 in overtime on Wednesday to get through to the championship final. The win extends the single season program record for victories to 12 and stopped a two game slide to end the regular season.
Mount Saint Mary features four 40-point scorers in 2018, led by senior midfielder
Dylan De Meo (Franklin Square, N.Y.). De Meo holds the team lead in assists with 52 and points with 88 and is poised to reach at least 90 points for the second straight season and has recorded at least 80 points in the last three campaigns. He has put together a strong all-around season for the Knights, causing 16 turnovers and picking up 47 groundballs.
Classmate
Danny Kugler (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) became the first 60 goal scorer in a season on Wednesday after scoring five times against the Privateers. He has netted a career and single season standard 61 goals and is second on the team with 69 points to go along with 46 groundballs.
Two more seniors,
Nicholas Graziano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and
Tristan Earle (Millrift, Pa.) have put together strong seasons, with Earle scoring 32 times and picking up 39 groundballs and Graziano posting 42 points on the strength of 28 goals and 14 assists.
Freshman Mathew Martino (Watertown, Conn.) has caused a team-high 21 turnovers to go along with 44 groundballs, while
Peter Beidl (Clifton Park, N.Y.) has helped anchor the backline with 58 groundballs and 16 caused turnovers.
Kenneth Gallagher (Northport, N.Y.) has won 248 face-offs to date, posting a .566 winning percentage, and leads the team with 98 groundballs.
Christopher Doerr (Pleasantville, N.Y.) mans the cage for the Knights and has made 151 saves and holds a .481 save percentage and a 11.05 goals against average.
Scouting The Mariners: USMMA snuck past Farmingdale State in overtime in the semifinal round and enters Saturday's contest at 12-2 overall and as the top seed after going unbeaten in the conference regular season.
Nick Treon and Pat Coll lead the Mariners' offensive attack with 48 goals apiece, with Treon totaling 88 points. Coll is third on the team with 62 points, with Jack Renard totaling 64 points on the strength of 35 goals and 29 assists.
Kyle Busher holds a .769 winning percentage at the face-off 'x' in 273 attempts and leads the team with 159 groundballs. Brendan Kane has seen the bulk of action in the cage, playing 603:41 of a possible 829:46, making 91 saves and posting a 10.04 goals against average and a .474 save percentage.
Regular Season Match-Up: USMMA scored an 18-9 win in Newburgh on April 21, holding a 52-39 edge in shots and a 26-5 advantage in face-offs. Renard scored five times and registered eight points for the Mariners with Treon scoring five times and assisting on two other goals. Mount Saint Mary was led by three goals each from Graziano and Kugler.
How They Got Here: Both teams needed overtime to advance past their semifinal opponents on Wednesday. De Meo scored the Mount's final three goals of the game against Maritime, tying the score in the final minute of regulation and winning the game in the overtime period. Doerr finished with 11 saves, including two in the opening minute of the overtime period.
USMMA also needed an equalizer in the final minute of regulation time against Farmingdale State, with Renard scoring with 59 seconds left to tie the score at 12-12. Tucker Dodson went on to score the game winning just over two minutes into overtime to secure the win. Kane finished with five saves in goal for the Mariners.
What's At Stake: Saturday's winner will represent the Skyline Conference in the 2018 NCAA Tournament. USMMA has made two appearances in the national tournament (2007, 2009), while the Mount is in search of its first appearance in the event.
