Mount Saint Mary College celebrated Senior Day prior to their game with St. Joseph's Long Island, honoring
Carter Laughman,
Ryan Ciuffo,
Henry Micyk,
Devin Lanzer,
Luke Dombroski, and
Kenny Leen. Freshman face-off specialist
Joseph Corallo got the Knights off to a good start by winning the opening draw, as he went 11-14 in the face-off circle on the day. It wouldn't come until late in the quarter, but the Knights would score first with
Robby Maurer finding
Hayden Mitchell for the goal.
The Knights' defense, led by captains
Carter Laughman,
Luke Dombroski,
Kenny Leen, and
Ryan Ciuffo, kept the Mount in the game all day. Leen had one of his best games of the year, recording 14 saves for a .737 save percentage, and Laughman and Dombroski made key veteran plays down the stretch. On the opening possession of the second quarter,
Hayden Mitchell would power his way past the Golden Eagles' defense for a goal to make it 2-0 Mount Saint Mary. Long Island was able to shift the momentum with two quick goals of their own to tie it at 2-2.
Joseph Corallo responded with a goal 18 seconds later, but St. Joe's once again tied it up 3-3 heading into the half.
With the Knights' defense running on all cylinders, the Mount had high hopes of a conference victory in the second half. All members of the Mount Saint Mary defense, including poles
Carmen Marino and
Sean Burns, helped out with impressive performances. Neither team scored in the quarter after a five-goal second period, as the score stood 3-3 entering the fourth quarter.
St. Joe's scored quickly to open the quarter, then added another goal minutes later to take a 5-3 lead. With their backs against the wall, the Knights were held scoreless for over 30 minutes straight leading up to this point.
Robby Maurer was able to find
Devin Lanzer on the Golden Eagles' doorstep to finally get the Mount back in the score column. Goalie
Kenny Leen made some big-time saves down the stretch for Mount Saint Mary, keeping them in the game. With just 41 seconds remaining, freshman
Tyler Mackay attempted a crazy backhand shot that he put between the legs of the goalie to tie the game at 5-5.
Joseph Corallo won the ensuing faceoff like he had been doing all game long, giving Mackay a chance to find senior
Carter Laughman, who sniped a goal in the top right corner to give the Knights a 6-5 lead with 22 seconds left. Mount Saint Mary held on for the epic 6-5 comeback win on Senior Day over St. Joseph's Long Island.
