Women’s Volleyball Splits on Opening Day of Oneonta Invitational (Updated)

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball team (1-1) opened the new season with a split on the first day of the Oneonta Invitational, hosted by SUNY Oneonta. Friday saw the Knights open their season with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-12) shutout victory over Curry College, but they fell to the tournament's host Oneonta (2-0), 3-1 (25-14, 23-25, 25-10, 25-18), to close out the evening.
 
Junior outside hitter Kayla Kurka (Islip, N.Y.) had a big opening match for the Knights, dropping down 13 kills with a .407 hitting percentage across three sets against Curry. Senior middle blocker Natalie Candarelli (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) led the team with a .462 hitting percentage and matched sophomore outside hitter Rachel Sabatini (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) with seven kills. Sophomore setter Kristen Maddock (Medford, N.Y.) dished out 28 assists, while junior libero Jen Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) served up seven services aces and picked up 13 digs.
 
The Knights had more trouble in their later match, facing off with the tournament's host Oneonta. The Knights hit just .050 in the nightcap, while Oneonta hit at a .178 clip.
 
Sabatini matched Oneonta's Natalie Poljak with a match-high 10 kills. Candarelli provided nine more for the Knights in the loss. Maddock handed out 30 more assists, while also leading the team with 16 digs.
 
The Knights return to action on Saturday, Aug. 30, when they face off with Lehman College at noon and Hartwick College at 2 p.m. to close out the tournament.
