Women's Volleyball Drops First Matches of the Year

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball team dropped both of its matches in the MSMC tri-match.

Rapid Recap
The Knights hosted their second tri-match of the season as they looked to build upon their 6-0 start to the season. Things did not go as planned to open the first match against Ramapo, as the Mount trailed 7-1 in the opening set. Mount Saint Mary battled back with contributions from multiple players to tie the set at 9-9. Another 7-1 run from the Roadrunners helped them pull away, but the Knights continued to fight. Trailing 23-17, Mount Saint Mary put together a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to just two, but the Roadrunners held on for a 25-21 victory.

Julianna Simone made her presence felt early in the second set, recording three kills and two aces to help the Mount jump out to a 6-3 lead. The Knights extended their advantage to as many as five points before Ramapo responded with seven unanswered points to take a 12-10 lead. The Roadrunners' offense proved too much for the Knights down the stretch as Ramapo took the second set, 25-19.

Looking to avoid the sweep, the Knights came out strong in the third set. Senior setter Sofia Fredericks continued her impressive career at the position, recording her 1,000th career assist in the match. After falling behind early, the Mount took control with a 6-1 run that included three kills from Nicolette Pirro. Mount Saint Mary built a 22-15 advantage late in the set, but Ramapo mounted a furious comeback, scoring 10 of the final 11 points to steal the set, 25-23, and complete the 3-0 sweep.

After Mount Saint Mary struggled in its first match of the day, the Knights looked to bounce back against Centenary University. The Mount got off to a strong start, with Nicolette Pirro stepping up with 11 kills, 21 digs and six aces. A 7-0 run from the Cyclones gave them a 12-9 lead, but the Knights responded with seven unanswered points of their own. Julianna Simone added eight kills, five aces and two block assists to the stat sheet as the first set remained tightly contested. Tied at 21-21, the Knights came through in the clutch, as Sofia Fredericks found Pirro for the set-clinching kill to give the Mount a 25-23 victory.

Centenary responded in the second set with a 9-2 run to open the frame. Mount Saint Mary battled back and trimmed the deficit to just three points at 12-9, but the Cyclones maintained their advantage before pulling away late with an 8-1 run to take the set, 25-14.

With the Knights now heading to a fourth set for the first time this season, they looked to regain control in the third. Mount Saint Mary jumped out to a 12-5 lead and appeared poised to extend its advantage, but Centenary responded by scoring 12 of the next 15 points to take a 17-15 lead. Kills from Emily Baron and Kaitlin Dillon helped cut the deficit to one late in the set, but the Cyclones held on for a 25-22 victory.

Centenary carried its momentum into the fourth set, taking an early lead and never surrendering it. With the Cyclones leading 11-8, they used a 7-0 run to build a commanding advantage. Centenary eventually closed out the set, 25-13, to defeat the Knights, 3-1. The loss moves Mount Saint Mary's record to 6-2 on the season.
