Women's Soccer Ushers in New Era Under Nasypany

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The 2014 campaign represents a new era for the Mount Saint Mary College women's soccer team. In addition to a significant amount of turnover and newcomers, the Knights welcome new head coach and former All-American BreLynn Nasypany into the fold. Nasypany joins the Mount after most recently serving as an assistant coach for William Smith College, the defending Division III women's soccer national champions.

"When I played and coached, there were maybe one or two games that we lost in season," said Nasypany of her time at William Smith. "We can bring that here, and I think it's something that can be expanded upon because here they tend not to lose conference games either."

The Knights have gone 8-0 against the Skyline Conference in each of the last three regular seasons, and have appeared in the conference title game four straight years. Nasypany inherits a group with a lot of experience with success, as none of the returning student-athletes have ever lost a conference game. Nasypany explained that coming from a place with a winning tradition alleviates the pressure of taking over a team that does not know how to lose.

"There's a ton of potential that's being brought back from that class," said Nasypany. "With the leadership that's in that class, we can continue to expand upon the winning run that they've had in the past."

The Knights bring back six seniors this season, including All-Conference players Jordyn Catapano (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), Nicole Gianotti (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) and Vanessa DiSilvio (Massapequa, N.Y.). Marissa Segreto (West Islip, N.Y.) was second on the team last year with eight goals and 21 points. Renee Schultz (Waldwick, N.J.) started 21-of-22 games in 2013 and played a key role as a two-way midfielder for the Knights. Michelle Sabogal (Forest Hills, N.Y.) was effective in limited minutes last season, scoring two goals on just 13 shots and adding an assist for five points on the year.

Three juniors round out the upperclassmen for the Knights this year. Melissa Guillemette (Branford, Conn.) finished third on the team last season with four goals. Abigail McQuillen (Greenville, N.Y.) is the only returning goalkeeper for the Knights. She recorded a 0.56 goals against average in eight games last year with a .833 save percentage. Melissa Maini (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) returns after missing the 2013 season. In her freshman campaign in 2012, she started eight games and recorded six points on a goal and four assists. Also returning for the Knights is sophomore Genevieve Stinson (Troy, N.Y.), who made 15 appearances in 2013.

Outnumbering the returning players is the freshman class, which could field a starting lineup on its own with 11 newcomers to the roster. Goalkeeper Mary Riley (Newburgh, N.Y.) is a local talent who was a three-time All-League and two-time All-Section selection, as well as her team's Most Valuable Player at Our Lady of Lourdes High School.

Six freshmen are slated for roles on defense with the Knights, which can help continue the tradition of strong defense at the Mount. Allison Jones (Merrick, N.Y.), Gina Sargente (Warwick, N.Y.), Destiny Ribadeneyra (Maybrook, N.Y.) and Bridget McKeever (Wallkill, N.Y.) are all strictly defenders for the time-being, while Jessica Lanning (Hicksville, N.Y.) and Emily Scheuer (North Babylon, N.Y.) may also see time in the midfield.

Nicole Cavallo (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) also comes from nearby John Jay High School. She is the lone Knight rookie listed strictly as a midfielder. Her high school teammate Danielle Luciano (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) may join her in the middle as well, but could also see time on the front line. Luciano is a two-time All-Section honoree, as well as a four-time All-League selection.

Looking to anchor the Knights' attack for years to come are Dava Fortunato (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and Alex DeSena (Staten Island, N.Y.). Fortunato is a former All-Section and All-League selection out of Eastchester High School, while DeSena was a three-year varsity athlete for St. Joseph Hill Academy.

"The lack of experience for the first-year group plays off the experience that the upperclassmen group has," said Nasypany. "Their experience will bring some light to the first-year group, which has already stepped up so much and it's not going to be something that will hinder our performance at all."

The defending Skyline regular-season champs begin their season with a tough matchup at Vassar College on Friday, Aug. 29 at 5:30 p.m. They will quickly return to Kaplan Field for their home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 3, when they host Ramapo College under the lights at 7 p.m.

The Knights will kick off Skyline play on Saturday, Sept. 20, when they host SUNY College at Old Westbury. A key game to mark off on the schedule will take place on Saturday, Oct. 18, when the Knights travel to Farmingdale State College to exact revenge on the Rams, who defeated the Knights in the Skyline Championship game last season and are the seven-time defending Skyline Champions. The Knights have not lost to Farmingdale State in the regular season since 2010.

Nasypany has been working to implement her game plan and style throughout the preseason. Though the plays might be different, Nasypany says her student-athletes still have the same goals in mind.

"I've sat down with the players and asked 'What are your goals and what do you guys want to accomplish?' and the first thing everyone said is 'We want to win the Skyline Conference,'" said Nasypany. "So the drive is there. The want to win is there."
