Box Score NEWBURGH, N.Y. – In a matchup that featured 34 total hits, Manhattanville College (9-10) took down the Mount Saint Mary College baseball team (10-8), 11-8, Wednesday afternoon at the Mount.
The runs were scoring in bunches as the hits kept piling on through Wednesday's non-conference matchup. Manhattanville got on the board quickly, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on RBI hits by Jordanis Nunez and Joe Anselmi. The Knights evened the score when both senior left fielder
Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y.) and freshman third baseman
Rob Peccerillo (Staten Island, N.Y.) picked up RBI singles in the home team's first at bat.
Nunez came through again for the Valiants in the top of the second with a two-RBI single, but Carminati struck again in the home half of the inning with a single through the left side that plated freshman shortstop
Jimmy Papineau (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.). Nunez knocked in a run for the third time in the fourth with a single to left that put the Valiants up, 5-3.
The Knights took the lead with a three-run rally in the fifth. Sophomore center fielder
Mike Leone (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled in Peccerillo, and later scored on a Papineau single to tie the game. Senior catcher
Chris Chieffo (Waterbury, Conn.) gave the Knights their first lead at 6-5 with a single up the middle that brought Papineau around to score.
The Knight lead did not last long, as Nunez stayed red hot with a two-RBI double down the right field line in the sixth that put Manhattanville back up, 7-6. Senior right fielder
Angelo Biondo (Hauppauge, N.Y.) tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when he knocked in Peccerillo from third after reaching on an error by the second baseman. Freshman shortstop
Steve Notaro (Staten Island, N.Y.) followed with a single to left to bring in Leone and give the Knights an 8-7 lead.
The big blow for Manhattanville came in the eighth when the Valiants rallied for four runs. Nunez allowed for another run to score when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, tying the game at eight. Robbie Lynch then brought in Kevin Brady on a sacrifice fly to center to give the Valiants a 9-8 lead. Bobby Guerra later singled up the middle to bring in two more runs, to give the Valiants the 11-8 lead that they did not surrender.
Zack Eklund picked up the win in 2.2 innings of relief work for the Valiants. He allowed just two hits and no runs. Junior reliever
David Hobbs (East Rockaway, N.Y.) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing four runs on six hits in two innings of work. Sam Garito picked up the save for Manhattanville by picking up the last out of the game.
Nunez knocked in seven runs and scored twice in a perfect 4-for-4 effort for the victorious Valiants. Chris Conklin when 3-for-5 with three runs scored, while Guerra knocked in a pair in a 2-for-4 outing.
Sophomore second baseman
James Nakashian (Massapequa, N.Y.) led the Knights with a 4-for-6 game, scoring once. Carminati went 2-for-6 with a pair of RBI, while Leone and Peccerillo each scored twice and knocked in another in their respective two-hit efforts.
The Knights get back to Skyline play on Saturday, April 12, when they head out to SUNY College at Old Westbury for doubleheader with the Panthers. Game one is set to begin at 12 p.m.
