Box Score 2 WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College baseball team (9-6, 4-0 Skyline) solidified itself atop the Skyline Conference standings with a sweep of Yeshiva University (0-18, 0-13 Skyline) Sunday afternoon at Dutchess Stadium. The Knights won game one, 6-2, and then picked up the game two victory, 6-1.
The Knights scored five unearned runs in the first five innings of game one on Sunday. They finally scored an earned run in the bottom of the seventh on a suicide squeeze by sophomore second baseman
James Nakashian (Massapequa, N.Y.). Yeshiva grabbed a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, but was unable to get back into the game.
Sophomore starter
Ryan Turton (Westbury, N.Y.) earned his first win of the season, tossing five scoreless innings and striking out nine batters. Jonathan Gardner took the loss for Yeshiva after allowing six runs (one earned) in eight innings of work.
Senior left fielder
Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y.) led the Knights with a 2-for-3 game, knocking in a run and scoring another. Nakashian added an RBI in his 1-for-3 outing, while senior center fielder
Zach Kenny (Hicksville, N.Y.) scored twice in a 1-for-5 effort.
Jake Frankel went 1-for-3 with a run scored for the Maccabees. Elan Paul matched with a 1-for-3 game, while Ephraim Botwinick scored the other run in an 0-for-1 effort with two walks.
The Knights quickly took a 2-0 lead in the first in game two on an RBI groundout by sophomore first baseman
Matt Cahill (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), which was followed by freshman second baseman
Luis Rivera (Linden, N.J.) scoring on a passed ball. Carminati picked up an RBI single in the third to put the Knights up, 3-0.
Junior third baseman
Rocco Pepe (Commack, N.Y.) and freshman right fielder
Connor Doyle (Hicksville, N.Y.) each picked up RBIs in the fifth inning to push the Knight lead to 5-0. Yeshiva scored its only run in the top of the sixth on a Zachary Feld groundout, but the Knights quickly erased it when Cahill knocked in Rivera on a sacrifice fly.
Freshman starter
Joey Pugliese (Highland, N.Y.) earned his first collegiate victory in game two, tossing five innings of one-hit ball and striking out five Yeshiva batters. Feld took the loss for the Maccabees, allowing three runs (two earned) in four innings of work while walking six batters.
Rivera went 1-for-1 with three walks in game two, resulting in three runs scored. Cahill did not pick up a hit, but managed to knock in two runs and score another.
Frankel went 1-for-3 with the only run scored for Yeshiva in game two. Jonathan Berger got the only other hit for the Maccabees in a 1-for-2 effort.
The Knights return to action on Tuesday, April 8, when they host SUNY Oneonta in a non-conference doubleheader at Dutchess Stadium. First pitch of game one is set to be hurled at 4 p.m.
