Gattoni’s Double Hatty Lifts Women’s Lacrosse over Ramapo, 17-4

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Freshman attacker Katie Gattoni (Old Tappan, N.J.) tallied a career-best six goals and eight points to fuel the Mount Saint Mary College women's lacrosse team (5-3) to a 17-4 victory over Ramapo College (3-3) Thursday evening at Kaplan Field.
 
Gattoni scored five of her six goals in the first half. She now leads the Knights with 25 goals through eight games. She also added a pair of assists.
 
The early minutes of the game suggested a tough battle for both teams. Katie Duca scored for the Roadrunners to put them up 1-0 at the 26:22 mark in the first half. The Knights followed with back-to-back goals by sophomore midfielder Katie McGinnis (Shelton, Conn.) and freshman defender Amanda Clemens (Baldwin, N.Y.) to put the Knights up, 2-1. Monica Torres and Lacey Gruendling scored the next two goals for Ramapo to the Roadrunners up, 3-2. These were the last goals the visitors would score for almost 44 minutes.
 
The Knights seized control of the game after Gattoni tied the game at the 20:37 mark. This sparked a run of 14 unanswered goals for the Knights that stretched into the second half. Duca scored again at 8:07 of the second frame to end the Knights' run, but senior defender Molly Bauer (Levittown, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the year later in the half to give the Knights the last score of the game.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Deirdre Ray (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) stopped four shots to pick up the win Thursday evening. Ramapo's Reagan Vier made 15 saves, but she allowed 17 goals to suffer the loss.
 
Senior attacker Nicole Palmieri (Elwood, N.Y.) also recorded a hat trick on Thursday with a trio of goals. Sophomore defender Nicole Scicutella (Massapequa, N.Y.) picked up three points with two goals and an assist, and McGinnis added a pair of goals as well. Ray and senior midfielder Erica Massmann (West Babylon, N.Y.) led the team with four ground balls each, while sophomore attacker Jen Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) caused two turnovers. Palmieri was all over the draw controls, picking up a game-high 11 on Thursday.
 
Duca scored two of the Roadrunners' four goals in Thursday's matchup. She also added an assist for a three-point outing, while Gruendling added a goal and an assist. Vier scooped up a game-high seven ground balls.
 
The Knights held a large advantage in shots, firing off 37 to just nine for the Roadrunners. They picked up 22 ground balls to 13 for Ramapo, and also held the edge in draw controls, 18-5. The Knights were successful on all nine of their clear attempts.
 
The Knights, riding a five-game winning streak, face their toughest task of the season on Saturday when they host Skyline Conference leader Farmingdale State College at Kaplan Field. Saturday's crucial matchup is set to kick off at 12 p.m. Saturday is also Senior Day for the women's lacrosse team, where the Knights' four seniors will be honored in a ceremony prior to game time.
