Baseball Swept by Purchase; Faces Mount Saint Vincent Tomorrow for Skyline Berth

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College baseball team (13-18, 7-8 Skyline) was swept by Purchase College (16-10, 12-4 Skyline) in a Skyline Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon by scores of 5-3 and 6-0. The sweep leaves the Knights in a playoff-like scenario for tomorrow's single game against the College of Mount Saint Vincent.

The winner of Sunday's game between Mount Saint Mary and Mount Saint Vincent will earn a berth into the Skyline Conference Championship Tournament. The two teams will face off at Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale N.Y. tomorrow, April 27, at 12 p.m.

Game one got off to a rough start for the Knights, as Purchase took a 2-0 lead on a pair of RBI singles in the bottom of the first. The Knights rallied back in the second with an RBI double by senior right fielder Angelo Biondo (Hauppauge, N.Y.) and RBI single by sophomore center fielder Mike Leone (Staten Island, N.Y.) to tie the game at 2-2. Freshman third baseman Luis Rivera (Linden, N.J.) gave the Knights the lead in the top of the fourth with a single to right that scored senior catcher Chris Chieffo (Waterbury, Conn.).

Purchase quickly took the lead back in its next at-bat when Michael Sarni brought in two runs on a double to leave the Panthers up, 4-3, after four innings. Purchase got one more in the seventh on a single by Frank Fantino to reach the final score of 5-3.

Adam Brant picked up the win for the Panthers, tossing 6.1 innings and allowing three runs. Christian Knochen notched a save after going 2.2 innings in relief without allowing a run. Freshman starter C.J. Szczesny (Syracuse, N.Y.) suffered the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) in seven innings of work.

Sarni went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run to lead the Panthers in Saturday's opener. Michael Piekarczyk went 2-for-4 with a run, and Francisco matched with a 2-for-4 outing and an RBI.

Chieffo hit 2-for-3 with a triple and a run for the Knights, while Biondo knocked in one and scored another in a 1-for-4 effort. Senior left fielder Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y.) went 1-for-3 with a double and a run.

Saturday's finale got off to the same start as the opener; with the Panthers taking an early 2-0 lead with a pair of run-scoring hits in the bottom of the first. Purchase scored again in the second to go up by three, and then added another in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. They capped off the game with a two-run sixth to put the Knights away by a score of 6-0.

Chris Nast went the complete seven innings to pick up the win for the Panthers, allowing just three hits without yielding a run. Freshman starter Kevin Duffy (Wallingford, Conn.) saw his streak of three straight starts of one earned run come to an end, allowing four runs in 3.1 innings to suffer his fourth loss of the year.

Michael Skoller had a big game for the Panthers, knocking in three runs on three hits and stealing two bases. Sarni completed a solid day with a 2-for-2 effort in game two, hitting a double and a triple to knock in a run and score twice.

Freshman third baseman Rob Peccerillo (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Leone each hit 1-for-3 in game two. Freshman shortstop Jimmy Papineau (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) hit 1-for-1 with a walk.

The Knights look to bounce back on Sunday to give themselves a chance to compete for the 2014 Skyline Championship. A win will push the Knights into a first-round matchup with No. 3 seed Farmingdale State College, which the Knights swept back on April 5 at Dutchess Stadium. A loss will end the Knights' postseason hopes.
