Box Score PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The No. 3 seeded Mount Saint Mary College women's lacrosse team (8-7) was eliminated in the semifinal round of the Skyline Conference Championships by No. 2 St. Joseph's College (L.I.) Wednesday evening, falling 14-7 to the Golden Eagles at Danzi Stadium.
The game was tight for the first 12 minutes, with the Knights taking the lead at the 18:30 mark on back-to-back goals by sophomore attacker
Jen Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) and senior attacker
Nicole Palmieri (Elwood, N.Y.). The Golden Eagles then strung together five straight goals to take a 6-2 lead. Gries got on the board again with 11:11 to play in the opening half, but three straight goals by the home team put the Knights down by six goals. Sophomore defender
Nicole Scicutella (Massapequa, N.Y.) threw one into the back of the net before the period came to a close to leave the Knights down 9-4 at the break.
The Golden Eagles held the Knights scoreless through the first 22 minutes of the second half, scoring four goals in that time to take a 13-4 lead. The Knights scored three of the final four goals of the game, including Scicutella's second and third of the game, but it was not enough as the Knights fell, 14-7.
Courtney Wickline picked up the semifinal win for the higher seed, making eight saves and allowing just seven goals. Sophomore goalkeeper
Deirdre Ray (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) suffered the loss, but made a game-high 12 stops.
Heather Ferchland led the Golden Eagles with four points on three goals and an assist. Tori Gregson matched her four points with a pair of goals and two assists.
Scicutella also turned in a four-point effort, scoring three times and adding a late assist. Gries scored twice, while sophomore defender
Claire Duffy (Monroe, N.Y.) contributed a goal and an assist. Three Knights picked up four ground balls each, and senior defender
Molly Bauer (Levittown, N.Y.) caused four turnovers.
The Golden Eagles now advance to the Skyline Conference Championship finals at top seed Farmingdale State College this Saturday, April 26. The Knights finished the regular season in third place, their highest finish in program history.
