Baseball Falls to Mount Saint Vincent, 4-3; Game Two Suspended

Box Score

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College baseball team (11-15, 5-6 Skyline) dropped its doubleheader opener at the College of Mount Saint Vincent (12-16, 5-7 Skyline), 4-3, Monday afternoon. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was suspended after 2 2/3 innings due to scheduling conflicts at the field. No make-up date has been announced at this time.

Josh Sharpe got things started for the Dolphins in the bottom of the first, singling up the middle to bring in the game's first run. He struck again in the third with a two-RBI single through the right side to put the home team up, 3-0. Jason Rivera capped off a big third for the Dolphins with an RBI double down the right field line to put them up, 4-0.

The Knights got on the board twice in the sixth. Sophomore center fielder Mike Leone (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled to left, scoring sophomore first baseman Silverio Santiago (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) to cut the deficit to three. Senior catcher Chris Chieffo (Waterbury, Conn.) plated another with a single down the left field line to leave the Knights down, 4-2, after six innings.

The Knights managed to put together an opportunity to tie the game in the top of the ninth. Chieffo reached on an error to lead off the inning, and then he stole second. He then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by senior right fielder Angelo Biondo (Hauppauge, N.Y.), cutting the deficit to a run without an out. However, the next three Knights were unable to bring Biondo around to score, stranding the tying run at second base to end the game.

Brian Rush picked up the win for the Dolphins, going six innings and allowing two unearned runs. Sean Kanganis picked up a save after holding the Knights to just one unearned run across the final three innings. Sophomore starter Logan Kurtz (Gansevoort, N.Y.) suffered the loss after allowing four runs in 2.2 innings of work.

Sharpe went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run to lead the Dolphins to victory. Leone batted 2-for-4 for the Knights, picking up an RBI. Biondo and Chieffo each hit 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Knights return to action tomorrow, April 22, with a non-conference matchup with City College of New York. The game is set to begin at Dutchess Stadium at 4 p.m.
