Nine Pitchers Combine to Shut Out John Jay, 2-0

WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College baseball team (5-6) sent out a new pitcher each inning in its non-conference matchup against John Jay College of Criminal Justice (1-12) Wednesday evening, and each of the nine hurlers tossed a scoreless frame to lead the Knights to a 2-0 victory at Dutchess Stadium.
 
Sophomore pitcher Sean Betterly (East Meadow, N.Y.) picked up the win after a scoreless sixth inning that included a strikeout. Matthew Quirindongo suffered the loss for John Jay after allowing two earned runs across 5.1 innings of work. Junior reliever David Hobbs (East Rockaway, N.Y.) picked up the save with a scoreless ninth.
 
The Knights finally broke through in the sixth, scoring the first run of the game on a bases loaded walk by freshman third baseman Luis Rivera (Linden, N.J.). Senior Angelo Biondo (Hauppauge, N.Y.) pinch hit for the next batter, and brought in a run with a sacrifice fly to center to put the Knights up, 2-0.
 
Sophomore second baseman James Nakashian (Massapequa, N.Y.) accounted for two of the Knights' four hits on Wednesday in a 2-for-4 effort that included a run scored and a stolen base. Senior left fielder Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y.) went 1-for-2 with a run, stolen base and a pair of walks. Senior catcher Chris Chieffo (Waterbury, Conn.) picked up the other hit, going 1-for-3.
 
Third baseman Ronald Barillas went 1-for-4 out of the leadoff spot for the Bloodhounds. Center fielder Esteban Soler hit 1-for-3 in the two hole with a stolen base, while shortstop Corry Harper picked up the third John Jay hit in a 1-for-4 outing.
 
Freshman pitcher Kevin Duffy (Wallingford, Conn.) and junior pitcher Ryan Gerhart (Winfield, N.J.) each struck out the side in their respective innings. The Knights' pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts over the course of the evening.
 
The Knights return to action on Saturday, April 5, with a crucial doubleheader against Farmingdale State College that is currently scheduled to be played at Dutchess Stadium. If played at the Dutch, first pitch of game one will be thrown at 1 p.m. Otherwise, game one should begin at 12 p.m.
