Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College baseball team (11-12) fell behind early and was unable to battle back, eventually dropping a 7-5 decision at Vassar College (9-6) Wednesday afternoon at Prentiss Field.
Vassar brought in five runs across the first three innings to put a lot of pressure on the Knight offense. They got on the board for the first time in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by sophomore first baseman
Matt Cahill (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.). Sophomore center fielder
Mike Leone (Staten Island, N.Y.) plated another an inning later to cut the deficit to three runs.
Vassar's Kyle Casey got one back for the Brewers in the home half of the sixth on a single to left, and then Brett Zaziski followed with another RBI single to improve the home team's lead to 7-2.
Freshman shortstop
Jimmy Papineau (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) brought in Cahill on a sacrifice fly in the eighth to make the score 7-3. The Knights put a rally together in the top of the ninth, but only managed to get two across, falling a pair of runs short of tying the game.
Freshman starter
Joey Pugliese (Highland, N.Y.) only managed 2.2 innings of work in the start, allowing five runs to suffer his first loss.
Six different Brewers knocked in runs in the home team's victory on Wednesday. Jason Garfinkel went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored to lead Vassar. Brooks English hit 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Nick Johnson batted 2-for-5 with an RBI as well.
Cahill went 2-for-3 for the Knights with an RBI and a run scored. Freshman third baseman
Rob Peccerillo (Staten Island, N.Y.) knocked in a run in his 2-for-4 outing, while Papineau hit 2-for-3 and knocked in a run.
The Knights return to action tomorrow, April 17, when they take on St. Joseph's College (L.I.) in a Skyline Conference doubleheader in Patchogue, N.Y. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
