Baseball Drops Pair of Competitive Games to Maritime on Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College baseball team (11-1, 5-3 Skyline) came out on the unfortunate side of a pair of high-scoring, competitive baseball games against Maritime College (12-15, 9-5 Skyline) Sunday afternoon at the Mount. Maritime scored a run in the top of the 10th inning in game one to grab a 9-8 win, and then held off what was almost a miraculous Knight comeback in game two to win, 11-10.

The Knights' six seniors, Zach Kenny (Hicksville, N.Y.), Chris O'Connor (Campbell Hall, N.Y.), Michael Klein (Elmont, N.Y.), Angelo Biondo (Hauppauge, N.Y.), Chris Chieffo (Waterbury, Conn.) and Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y.) were honored prior to first pitch in a Senior Day ceremony, recognizing them for their contributions to the Mount Saint Mary College baseball program over their tenures in the Blue and Black.

Game one was all Knights to start, as they scored in each of the first three innings. Sophomore first baseman Matt Cahill (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) kicked things off with an RBI single through the first side in the bottom of the first, and then another run came in on a fielding error to put the Knights up, 2-0. They added another run in the second on a sacrifice fly by sophomore second baseman James Nakashian (Massapequa, N.Y.).

Maritime got on the board for the first time in the third, picking up a pair of runs on a Matthew Sollin sacrifice fly and bringing in another run on a fielding error. The Knights got three back in their bottom of the third, starting with a double steal with runners on the corners that saw sophomore center fielder Mike Leone (Staten Island, N.Y.) touch home to put the Knights up, 4-2. Freshman third baseman Rob Peccerillo (Staten Island, N.Y.) then brought in Carminati on a sacrifice fly to center to add to the Knight lead. Biondo capped off the inning with an RBI single up the middle to put the Knights up, 6-2.

Maritime rallied back into the game, putting up three runs in the fourth and another in the sixth to knot things up at 6-6. The game went to the ninth with the same score before Maritime rallied for two more on a Joe Longo RBI single and hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to go up 8-6. Carminati came up clutch for the Knights in the ninth, doubling down the left field line with the bases loaded to send the game into extra innings. Brian McLaughlin smacked an RBI double for the Privateers in the top of the 10th to take a 9-8 lead, which they held in the bottom of the inning to take the win.

Ryan Alsdorf picked up the win for the Privateers after blowing the save in the ninth. Paul Pfundstein tallied a save after throwing a perfect 10th inning. Sophomore Ryan Turton (Westbury, N.Y.) shouldered the loss after allowing a run in extra innings.

Nick Galli went 3-for-6 with two doubles for the Privateers in game one, knocking in two runs and scoring another. Bruce Tyler batted 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Carminati knocked in two and scored two more in a 2-for-3 effort in the game one loss. Cahill hit 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Biondo also scored on and plated another in his 1-for-4 outing.

Maritime took the early advantage in game two, throwing up a four spot in the top of the first, starting with a bases-loaded double by McLaughlin that cleared the bases and capped off by an RBI single by Longo. The Knights cut the deficit in half in their first at bat on a pair of fielding errors that brought in two runs.

Maritime then exploded in the second inning to bring in seven runs, punctuated by a bases-loaded triple for Chris Stewart that put the Privateers up, 11-2. The Knights played catch-up from this point forward, making it a game over the next few innings.

The Knights picked up two runs on a fielding error and a wild pitch in the third. Carminati slapped an RBI single to get a run across in the fourth, and then Cahill followed suit with one of his own to cut the deficit to five runs.

The Knights' big rally came in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman designated hitter Jimmy Papineau (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) started things off with a double to right center to get the first run of the inning across. O'Connor then ripped a single up the middle to bring in another. Nakashian and Carminati followed with back-to-back sacrifice flies to bring in another two runs, leaving the Knights down, 11-10, with two innings to play.

The combination of junior reliever Andrew Conn (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and sophomore reliever Silverio Santiago (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) did a stellar job of keeping the Privateers off the board for the last five innings of the game, allowing the Knights to fight back.

The first two Knights were unable to get on base in the top of the seventh, bringing them down to their last out. Freshman third baseman Luis Rivera (Linden, N.J.) poked a line drive just past the second baseman to keep the Knights' hopes alive. Nakashian then snuck a perfect bunt down the third-base line to put the tying run in scoring position and the winning run on first. Carminati quickly went down 0-2 in the count before holding steady to work the count full. He then hit a fastball right on the money the other way, but right to the shortstop for the final out.

Trevor Cannella picked up a win for Maritime despite allowing 10 runs (four earned) in four innings. Pfundstein picked up his second save of the day after tossing the final three innings for the Privateers. Junior starter Ryan Gerhart (Winfield, N.J.) suffered the loss after allowing four runs in the first inning.

McLaughlin brought in four runs and scored another two in a 2-for-4 effort in game two. Longo also went 2-for-4, knocking in three and scoring another. Stewart went 2-for-4 as well with three RBI.

Carminati capped off a huge day with a 3-for-4 effort in game two. He knocked in two runs and scored another two. Nakashian had a nice game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. O'Connor went 1-for-3 in game two with two runs scored and an RBI.

The Knights look to bounce back with a non-conference matchup at the College of Staten Island on Tuesday, April 15. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
