Women’s Lacrosse Falls to St. Joseph’s-LI, 15-8

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – In a matchup with significant Skyline Conference implications, St. Joseph's College (L.I.) (12-3, 6-0 Skyline) defeated the Mount Saint Mary College women's lacrosse team (7-5, 4-2 Skyline), 15-8, Saturday afternoon at Danzi Stadium.
 
The loss locks the Knights in as the Skyline Conference's No. 3 seed heading into the Skyline Conference Championship tournament. They will take on the loser of Wednesday's matchup between St. Joe's and Farmingdale State College in the semifinal round of the conference tournament.
 
The Golden Eagles took control of the first half early, scoring the first two goals of the game. After freshman attacker Katie Gattoni (Old Tappan, N.J.) scored the Knights' first goal, Ela Igdeler tallied one to put St. Joe's up, 3-1. Gattoni scored again at the 20:19 mark, but the Golden Eagles quickly added two more. Sophomore midfielder Katie McGinnis (Shelton, Conn.) picked up her first goal of the game at 13:55, but the Eagles then went on a three-goal run to go up, 8-3. The Knights closed out the half with two of the last three goals to trail 9-5 at the break.
 
The home team quickly put up three more goals in the second half before the Knights could score again. Gattoni scored at the 21:49 mark, and then again at the 11:32 mark to cut the deficit to five. The Golden Eagles strung together their third three-goal run of the game to go up by eight before sophomore defender Claire Duffy (Monroe, N.Y.) added a goal with six second left to play.
 
Courtney Wickline made seven saves while defending the Golden Eagles' net to pick up the victory. Sophomore goalkeeper Deirdre Ray (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) made 10 saves in the loss.
 
Heather Ferchland led the home team with five points on four goals and an assist. Jenna Kelleher recorded a hat trick, while Tori Gregson picked up four points on two goals and two assists. Jessica Cordano led with three ground balls and tied with Nicole Lyman with three caused turnovers. Igdeler grabbed four draw controls to lead St. Joe's.
 
Gattoni tallied four goals and an assist for a five-point outing, improving her season totals to 37 goals and 42 points, both team bests. McGinnis added a pair of goals, while Duffy and sophomore defender Nicole Scicutella (Massapequa, N.Y.) scored the other two. Scicutella scooped up a game-high six draw controls.
 
The Golden Eagles fired off 29 shots, while the Knights managed 23. The home team held a 17-12 advantage in ground balls, but the Knights took a 13-11 edge in draw controls. Both teams went 14-for-14 on clear attempts.
 
The Knights return to action on Monday, April 14, when they take on Marywood University in the non-conference matchup that was originally scheduled for Feb. 27. The game is set to begin at 6 p.m.
