JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Mount Saint Mary College baseball team (4-6) fell, 6-2, in a non-conference matchup to New Jersey City University (4-8) Tuesday afternoon at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.
NJCU pitchers entered Tuesday's matchup on an 18-inning scoreless streak, which was extended to 22 innings before the Knights got on the board in the fifth. However, the Knights first got on the board after the Gothic Knights scored all six of their runs.
NJCU grabbed the lead in the first when first baseman Dan Berardi doubled down the left field line. The ball was mishandled in the corner, allowing designated hitter Andrew Niech to score and put the Gothic Knights up, 1-0. Niech knocked in a run himself in the third on a groundout to second that scored shortstop Nicholas D'Errico from third to improve the NJCU lead to two.
The Gothic Knights scored the rest of their runs with a four-run rally in the fourth. Left fielder Eric Giordano scored on a ground ball by center fielder Matthew Wagner. Catcher James Gardner then singled up the middle to plate D'Errico and Wagner. Niech knocked in the last run on a ground-rule double down the left field line to leave the Gothic Knights up, 6-0, through four innings.
The Knights broke NJCU's scoreless inning streak in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by sophomore first baseman
Matt Cahill (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) that knocked in freshman shortstop
Steve Notaro (Staten Island, N.Y.). The Knights scored one more time on an RBI groundout by freshman third baseman
Rob Peccerillo (Staten Island, N.Y.) in the top of the ninth, but the Knights were unable to build off that run in the end.
Kevin DeMauro tossed a complete game to pick up the win for NJCU, striking out eight batters and allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits. Sophomore starter
Sean Betterly (East Meadow, N.Y.) suffered the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) across 3.1 innings of work.
Niech and Gardner each went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored for NJCU on Tuesday. D'Errico hit 2-for-2 with a pair of runs, while second baseman Taylor Born batted 2-for-3.
Cahill led the Knights, going 2-for-2 with an RBI. Junior outfielder
Ryan Atkins (Wallkill, N.Y.) hit 1-for-2, and the Knights leading hitter, senior left fielder
Vinnie Carminati, went 1-for-4.
The Knights return to action tomorrow, March 26, when they take on John Jay College of Criminal Justice at the Rock Sports Park in Chester, N.Y. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
