OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College baseball team (4-5) dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Baruch College (5-8) Sunday afternoon on the campus of SUNY College at Old Westbury. The Bearcats won game one in walkoff fashion in eight innings, 3-2, and then came out victorious in the finale, 8-3.
The Knights led early in game one, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the third, including an RBI single by sophomore center fielder
Mike Leone (Staten Island, N.Y.). Baruch got a run back in the fourth on an RBI single by Dan Daley. They then tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Philip Loprete in the bottom of the sixth. After the scheduled seven innings were completed with a tie score, the game went into extra innings. In the home half of the eighth, Richard Valerio hit the third of three straight two-out singles for the Bearcats, knocking in a run for the victory.
Paul Perez picked up the win for Baruch, tossing the complete eight innings and allowing just two runs (zero earned). Freshman reliever
C.J. Szczesny (Syracuse, N.Y.) suffered the loss in 2.1 innings of relief, allowing the winning run in the eighth.
Leone went 4-for-4 out of the leadoff spot for the Knights, knocking in a run and scoring another. Sophomore second baseman
James Nakashian (Massapequa, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with a stolen base.
Baruch ran out to a big lead in game two. The Bearcats picked up three runs in the top of the fourth before adding five more in a big fifth inning that left them up, 8-0. The Knights rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but were unable to get back into the game late.
Andrew Lizardi went the full seven innings for Baruch, picking up the win after allowing three runs (two earned) and striking out three. Freshman starter
Kevin Duffy (Wallingford, Conn.) suffered the loss after going four innings and allowing four earned runs.
Senior designated hitter
Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in Sunday's game two defeat. Junior left fielder
Ryan Atkins (Wallkill, N.Y.) knocked in a pair of runs in his 1-for-3 effort.
The Knights return to action tomorrow, March 25, when they travel down to New Jersey City University for a non-conference matchup with the Gothic Knights. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
