Women’s Lacrosse Dropped by Vassar, 19-7

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's lacrosse team (0-3) fell to nearby rival Vassar College (3-1), 19-7, in non-conference action Tuesday evening at Kaplan Field.

The Knights played the Brewers even through the first 13 minutes of the game, trailing 4-3 after a goal by sophomore defender Claire Duffy (Monroe, N.Y.). Vassar netted a pair before the Knights scored again on a man-up goal by senior attacker Nicole Palmieri (Elwood, N.Y.) made it 6-4. Vassar then put together a big eight-goal run, highlighted by three Phoebe Tzannes scores, to give the Brewers a 14-4 lead at the half.

Senior midfielder Erica Massmann (West Babylon, N.Y.) netted the first goal of the second half, but Vassar quickly got a pair back to up its lead to 16-5. Duffy scored again at the 22:59 mark before a 14-minute scoring drought in the game. Junior attacker/midfielder Danielle Krupka (Northport, N.Y.) picked up her second goal of the year with 8:06 left to go, but Vassar scored the final three goals of the game to get to the 19-7 final score.

Hilary McDonnell picked up the win for the Brewers, making a pair of saves and allowing four goals in the first 30 minutes. Sophomore goalkeeper Deirdre Ray (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) suffered the loss for the Knights, allowing 19 goals and stopping seven shots.

Tzannes scored four times to lead the Brewers on Tuesday. Dara Davis picked up a hat trick and added a pair of assists for a five-point effort. Julia Trudell matched Davis with three goals and two assists. Isabelle Goldstein also recorded five points on four assists and a score, while Kim Mulvehill netted three.

Massmann and Duffy each scored twice for the Knights on Tuesday, while Krupka and freshman attacker Katie Gattoni (Old Tappan, N.J.) scored a goal and handed out an assist each. Ray picked up a team-high three ground balls from between the pipes.

The Brewers outshot the Knights, 29-17, on Tuesday, including 26 shots on goal to just 13 for the Knights. Vassar also led with 19 ground balls compared to 15 for the Mount. Vassar secured 16 draw controls, while the Knights grabbed 12.

The Knights get back to work quickly, as they host Manhattanville College at Kaplan Field on Thursday, March 20. The game is set to begin under the lights at 7 p.m.
