Knights’ Comeback Falls Short as St. Mary’s Walks Off for 8-7 Win

Box Score

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Mount Saint Mary College baseball team (1-2) rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game at 7-7, but St. Mary's College of Maryland (3-1) responded with a walkoff RBI single in the bottom of the inning to claim an 8-7 victory Sunday afternoon.

Senior leftfielder Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y.) walked with the bases loaded to cut the deficit to two runs in the top of the ninth, and then freshman shortstop Steve Notaro (Staten Island, N.Y.) punched a two-RBI single up the middle to complete the Knight comeback and knot the game up at seven apiece.

St. Mary's shortstop Luke Green was hit by a pitch with one away, and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Second baseman Zach Rowe came up clutch for the Seahawks, stroking a single into left field to score Green and pick up the victory for the home team.

The Knights took an early lead in Sunday's series finale, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first. Carminati tripled in freshman second baseman Luis Rivera (Linden, N.J.), and was then knocked in himself by Notaro on a groundout to second. St. Mary's got a run back in the home half of the inning when Rowe scored on a throwing error.

The Knights built upon their lead in the top of the third with another two runs. Notaro picked up his second RBI of the game with a single through the right side, scoring sophomore centerfielder Mike Leone (Staten Island, N.Y.) from second. Carminati scored on the next play, a single by sophomore first baseman Matt Cahill (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), upping the score to 4-1 in favor of the visitors.

The wheels fell off for the Knights in the bottom of the fifth when the Seahawks strung six runs together. Two infield singles and a pair of errors contributed to the big inning for the home team, but the big blow came off the bat of third baseman Alex Lenovitz, who smacked a single to left to bring in two more runs, leaving St. Mary's up, 7-4, by the time the inning was over. The Knights rallied to tie in the ninth, but St. Mary's picked up the win in their last at bat.

Sophomore relief pitcher Logan Kurtz (Gansevoort, N.Y.) suffered the loss after allowing the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. He tossed 1.2 innings, allowing two hits and striking out one. Sam Coe grabbed the win for the Seahawks, striking out one in 2/3 of an inning to escape the ninth.

St. Mary's was led by Rowe, who hit 2-for-5 out of the leadoff spot with an RBI and two runs scored. Green matched him with two runs and an RBI, going 1-for-3 on the afternoon. Lenovitz knocked in a pair of runs in a 1-for-4 outing.

Carminati batted 2-for-3 with a triple to close out a big opening weekend. He knocked in two runs and scored another two himself. Notaro went 3-for-5 with a game-high four RBIs, adding a stolen base as well. Leone scored two runs after drawing three walks.

The Knights return to action on Saturday, March 1, when they open up the Old Westbury Tournament with a 10:30 a.m. matchup with Baruch College. They will continue the tournament on Sunday, March 2, when they take on Ithaca College at 10:30 a.m.
