Darling Posts Shutout, Garcia Nets Two as Knights Oust Vassar

Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Mount Saint Mary College senior goalkeeper Matt Darling (Staatsburg, N.Y.) made 10 saves on Wednesday afternoon, leading his team to a 3-0 victory over Vassar College in non-conference action.  The Knights improve to 4-2 overall, while the Brewers drop back to 4-2-1.

The win for the Mount is the first in program history against Vassar, as the Brewers had won every previous meeting since 1986, save for a scoreless tie during the 2000 season.  Adding to the magnitude of the victory, the Knights hadn't scored against Vassar in five previous contests, with the team's last goal coming in the 2007 meeting between the teams.

Junior Matt Garcia (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) was the hero early on for the Knights, putting home a pair of goals inside the game's first 15 minutes.  Garcia scored the opening goal in the 10th minute, dribbling around a defender and creating enough space for a shot that found the back of the net.  Less than four minutes later, senior Brandon Mincher (Bayport, N.Y.) threaded a pass through to Garcia who ripped an attempt from 15 yards out to beat the Vassar goalkeeper.

Sophomore Michael Ennis (Carmel, N.Y.) added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute, making a nifty move around the goalkeeper following a long ball forward from sophomore Jarrett Armstrong (West Hempstead, N.Y.).

Darling faced a barrage of shots, as the Brewers held a 27-15 advantage for the game and owned a 13-2 edge in corner kicks.  But the Mount senior had an answer for each of the ten shots on goal and went on to earn his third shutout of the season.

With a confidence building win in their back pocket, the Knights open Skyline Conference play against NYU-Poly on Saturday, September 21.  Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. on Kaplan Field.
