NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team won its home opener on Friday evening, beating the Bard College Raptors, 5-1. The Knights move to 1-0, while the Raptors fall to 0-1.
The Knights dominated the first half, as junior
Matt Garcia (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) finished a cross from senior
Sean Lockwood (Manahawkin, N.J.) in the fifth minute to score his first goal of the season. Mount junior
Chris Marchese (Cold Spring, N.Y.) added the second goal of the night in the twenty-third minute as he headed a corner kick from Lockwood into the back of the net, putting the Knights up 2-0.
The Mount maintained their offensive advantage in the second half when sophomore
Michael Ennis (Carmel, N.Y.) scored off of an assist from freshman
Cole Niemec (Rochelle Park, N.J) in the 54th minute of play, giving the Knights a 3-0 lead. Feeling the pressure to score, the Raptors responded when freshman Austin Higgins (Toms River, N.J.) placed a shot to the near post to make it 3-1.
The Raptors goal would not go unanswered. In the 65th minute, Ennis put home his second goal of the night when senior
Sean Lockwood (Manahawkin, N.J.) crossed the ball from the left side setting Ennis up for a header. Lockwood had three assists on the night.
Getting in on the action, freshman
Nick Blomfield (Warwick, N.Y) capitalized on a free kick in the 87th minute, posting the first goal of his Mount career.
The Raptors goalkeeper, Daniel Gagne (East Longmeadow, Mass.), made six saves in the loss.
The Knights return to action on Tuesday, September 3 as they host SUNY Cobleskill. The game is set for 7:00 p.m.
