Kean Edges Mount

Box Score UNION, N.J. – In a back-and-forth contest, Kean University edged Mount Saint Mary College, 10-7, in a Skyline Conference game on Saturday afternoon.  The Cougars move to 8-4 overall (3-3 Skyline), while the Knights fall back to 9-5 overall (5-2 Skyline).

With the game tied at two, Mount junior Nicole Palmieri (Elwood, N.Y.) put home a feed from freshman Jen Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) to give the Knights a 3-2 advantage.  The Cougars answered with the next three goals, however, and led 5-3 with 4:19 remaining in the opening half.  Mount freshman Nicole Scicutella (Massapequa, N.Y.) responded with a goal at the 3:07 mark and sent the Knights to the half trailing 5-4.

After an opening goal by the Cougars, the Knights rattled off three straight to claim the lead.  A free position shot from senior Kaileen Spadaro (Islip, N.Y.) kicked off the run at the 22:27 mark.  Following eight scoreless minutes, Palmieri found the back of the net on a feed from sophomore Ela Igdeler (Islip, N.Y.) to tie the game at six.  Less than a minute later, Igdeler found freshman Kacie Mitterando (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) for the go-ahead goal.

Kean senior Lyndsey Cannon (Delran, N.J.) answered with a pair of unassisted goals to put the Cougars back on top.  Senior Stephanie Tocko (Toms River, N.J.) continued the run with a goal at the 11-minute mark to give Kean a 9-7 advantage.  The Knights failed to take advantage of a pair of free position shots down the stretch and Kean put home the clinching goal with 15 seconds remaining.

Spadaro led the Knights with three points on two goals and an assist.  Palmieri added two goals and Igdeler added a pair of assists for the visitors.  Freshman goalie Deirdre Ray (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) made eight saves and was tagged with the loss.

Cannon led the Cougars with four goals and an assist.  Junior Julie Knodt (Mount Laurel, N.J.) added three goals.

The Knights have a week off before hosting the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday, April 13.  The game is set for 1:00 p.m. on Kaplan Field.
