Knights Clinch Final Playoff Spot With Sunday Sweep of NYU-Poly

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FISHKILL, N.Y. – Needing just one win in two games to clinch the final playoff spot for the Skyline Conference, Mount Saint Mary College (16-16) took both ends of a double-header from NYU-Poly (3-20) on Sunday evening.  The Knights qualify as the sixth seed and will take on third-seeded Purchase College on Wednesday.

The Knights would make things interesting in game one, trailing 6-5 as the game headed to the bottom of the seventh inning.  In the seventh, the Mount strung together eight hits and took advantage of four NYU-Poly errors for 12 runs, pushing the score to 17-6 and forcing the game to end via the 10-run rule.  Freshman James Nakashian (Massapequa, N.Y.) had an RBI single, a two-run double, and scored both times he was on base during the inning.

Nakashian went on to finish 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs.  Freshman Matt Cahill (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) also added three hits (3-for-4) and three runs scored, while freshman Mike Leone (Staten Island, N.Y.) and junior Vinnie Carminati (Huntington, N.Y.) each added two hits and two RBIs.

Sophomore Matt Schumacher (Commack, N.Y.) came on in relief in the fourth inning and pitched four scoreless innings to earn the win.  He allowed just four hits while striking out two.

In game two, seven Mount pitchers combined on a seven-inning shutout as the Knights claimed a 9-0 victory.  MSMC plated four runs in the first inning and added five more over the final three frames as they maintained control throughout.

Senior Michael Matuk (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and sophomore Tyler Rivera (Staten Island, N.Y.) each went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while sophomore Rocco Pepe (Commack, N.Y.) finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.  Junior Brian Buechele (LaGrange, N.Y.) went 3-for-3.

Freshman Sean Betterly (East Meadow, N.Y.) pitched the first inning and was credited with the win.  Sophomore Ryan Gerhart (Winfield, N.J.) and sophomore David Hobbs (East Rockaway, N.Y.) each struck out the side in their respective innings of work.
