Defense Shines In Mount Win

Box Score

FISHKILL, N.Y. – With the help of four double plays, Mount Saint Mary College sophomore starting pitcher Andrew Conn (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) pitched eight-plus innings to earn the win as the Knights claimed an 8-2 victory over St. Joseph's College Brooklyn on Friday afternoon.  The Mount moved to 14-16 overall with the victory.

Mount senior Michael Matuk (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) sparked the defensive effort with a stellar play in the second inning.  With runners at the corners, Matuk dove to his left to cut down a sharply hit groundball and fired to second to start an inning-ending double play.  Senior shortstop Thomas McNoble (Breezy Point, N.Y.) also got in on the act, taking away a pair of sure-fire hits from the Bears, one with a play up the middle and one with a play in the hole.

Conn went eight and a third innings, allowing 10 hits and two earned runs to collect the victory.  Senior Joe CoFrancesco (Hamden, Conn.) came on in the ninth and induced a game-ending double play.

The Knights got on the board in the second when graduate student Paul Cherubino (Middletown, N.Y.) beat out a potential double play ball to allow freshman Matt Cahill (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) to score from third.  Cherubino also did some damage in the fourth, launching a two-run triple to left-center as the Knights hung three runs on the board in the frame to take a 4-0 advantage.

Senior Alec Seidman (Poughquag, N.Y.) delivered the final blow for the Knights in the eighth inning.  With the bases loaded, Seidman clobbered a grand slam over the high part of the wall in right-center.

Seidman finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBIs.  Cherubino went 1-for-3 with three RBIs, while freshman James Nakashian (Massapequa, N.Y.) and junior Vinnie Carminai (Huntington, N.Y.) each recorded a pair of hits.

The Knights return to action on Sunday with a Skyline Conference double-header against NYU-Poly.  The games will start at 4:00 p.m. at Dutchess Stadium.
