UNION, N.J. - Fourth-seeded Kean University outpaced fifth-seeded Mount Saint Mary College in Tuesday's Skyline Conference Tournament quarterfinal, eventually claiming a 24-8 decision to advance to Thursday's semifinals. The Knights finish the season with a record of 10-8, the first winning record in program history.
The Cougars roared out of the gates, scoring the game's first four goals. Mount freshman
Katie McGinnis (Shelton, Conn.) got the Knights on the board with an unassisted goal at the 25:15 mark, and when Kean answered, freshman
Claire Duffy (Monroe, N.Y.) followed with a goal to make it 5-2.
Kean would tally the next two, but junior
Erica Massmann (West Babylon, N.Y.) kept the Knights alive with a goal at 14:03. Unfortunately, the Cougars continued to trade two goals for one, and when Mount sophomore
Danielle Krupka (Northport, N.Y.) found the net at 11:14, the goal served to make the score, 9-4. Kean closed the half on a 7-2 run and carried a 16-6 edge to the half.
The Cougars opened the second half scoring, but sophomores
Nicole Cacioppo (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and
Ela Igdeler (Islip, N.Y.) would string together back-to-back goals to bring the Knights back to within nine (17-8). The Mount would not score again, however, as Kean closed the game with the final seven goals and went on to the 24-8 win.
Krupka led the Knights with two goals, while Igdeler posted team-highs for draw controls (4) and caused turnovers (3).
Kean advances to play top-seeded Farmingdale State College in the semifinals.
